KANSAS HIRES A BUFFALO, A HEISMAN FOR 'BAMA & THE SUNDAY PLAYS

It has been confirmed by The Kansas City Star Turner Gill, has been selected to be the new head coach at Kansas. The former coach at Buffalo had led the Bills to their first MAC Championship in decades last season. This year they fell to a disappointing 5-7, but Gill remained a hot coaching prospect. He was a quarterback at Nebraska from 1980-'83. He led the Huskers to a perfect 20-0 conference record & 3 consecutive Big-8 Championships. Gill played briefly in the CFL & tho he was a rousing success in the Great White North, he had to retire from football after suffering a severe concussion. Doctors told Gill that continuing to play was dangerous. He was also an outstanding shortstop, drafted out of high school by the White Sox & again after college by the Yankees. After the CFL, Gill played in the Yankees' minor league system for 2 seasons, batting .284. In 1989 he returned to Nebraska as a graduate assistant & he's been a coach ever since with stops at SMU, Green Bay, Nebraska & Buffalo. He was interviewed for the vacant Auburn job last December but didn't get the job. Former Auburn Tiger, Charles Barkley, said the reason Gill didn't get the job was because he is married to a white woman. Gill's daughter Jordan attends Kansas & is a sophomore majoring in journalism.

Mark Ingram became the first ever Heisman Trophy winner for the University of Alabama. In the closest voting ever, Ingram edged out Stanford RB Toby Gerhart, Texas QB Colt McCoy & Nebraska DT Ndamakong Suh. Florida QB finished a very distant 5th in the balloting. Ingram's 227 1st place votes narrowly bested Gerhart's 222 & McCoy's 203. Suh received a surprising 161 1st place votes. Tebow got but 43.

Northwest Missouri won the Division II National Championship this afternoon on a cold rainy Alabama afternoon. Center High's own, LeRon Council, ran for 176 yards & 2 scores as the Bearcats won their 3rd national title in the last 11 years in their 7th trip to the Championship game in that period, pretty amazing.

Three plays for Sunday's pro slate:

Green Bay(-3)  at Chicago

The Packers looked sloppy at times Monday night, but the important thing is they won again, exactly what they need in this playoff push. Win, even when you don't play your best, against a quality opponent, Baltimore. The Bears are a mess right now, so I might be walking straight into a trap, but I'll take the Packers to sweep the season series from Chicago giving just a field goal. This line might go to 3 1/2 or 4 by the time I get to it. If it does, I won't make a play, if it stays put at 3, it will be a small play.

Washington  at  Oakland(pick 'em)

If you'd have told me I'd actually be laying money on the Oakland Raiders a few weeks ago, I'd have told you that you should have your head examined. Bruce Gradkowski has made a major difference in the Raiders & their ability to compete. He's also upped their effort team-wise, they can win this game.

San Diego(+3 1/2)  at Dallas

This also might be a trap game, the Cowboys stink in December, Romo stinks in December & the Chargers are on a 7-game winning streak. Just looks too easy, so it will be my smallest play of the day.
