CHIEFS' FANS COME DISGUISED AS EMPTY SEATS, EXPECT MORE NEXT SUNDAY
If you were one of the estimated 30,000 Chiefs fans who went to Sunday's 'sellout' game at Arrowhead & sat quietly, disguised as an empty seat, shame on you. If you went to the game with a bag over your head or booed a lot, then I say good for you. The time for blind loyalty is over, it's time to tell this management team that you don't like supporting a loser, an embarrassment, that going to Arrowhead has become an expensive bore.
Let's face a few facts, this team stinks, they're terrible, can you see progress? Can you see anything out of this team that gives you confidence for next year? What about this team Scott Pioli has assembled gives you the belief the 'process' is headed in the right direction? Does Todd Haley's coaching, play calling & interaction with his players make you believe he is the right man for the job? Is there anything in Clancy Pendergast's defense that inspires fear in our opponents? How many out there believe Matt Cassel is our franchise quarterback? Does he look like a quarterback worthy of a $60-million contract? Is it Cassel or the coaching he receives coupled with poor game planning & even worse play calling? If you answered yes to any but the last question, you should seek professional help.
The Buffalo Bills were ranked 32nd(that's dead, freakin' last) in the league versus the run. So Haley calls 43 passes & just 26 running plays. Everybody can run on the Bills, everybody. Jamaal Charles ran for 143 yards Sunday, he even broke a 76-yard touchdown run. Charles has proven that even with one of the lamest offensive lines in the league, he can bust one once & a while. If they could spell him occasionally with an effective backup & he can hang onto the ball, Charles could be an effective back. But why take shots at the Bills' biggest weakness, let's see if they can defend a quick screen to a wide receiver. I think I can answer that one........THEY CAN!!!!! Stop running it already. Chan Gailey got fired so Haley could call this crap? Opening drive of the game stalls at the Buffalo 35, making a field goal attempt a 52-yarder. Nope, in spite of having a good kicker, Haley punts, the ball goes into the endzone, a net 15-yard punt. I don't understand the field position decisions he exercises. Plus more baffling clock management in the game's last minute, taking 37-seconds to get off 2 snaps. Real productive. Anyone else think Lance Long looked like somebody's little brother trying to play with the big kids? He's going to get seriously hurt out there, he's smaller than advertised, he can't make anyone miss & he takes shot after shot.
The dropped passes continue to plague Haley's offensive machine, along with pass protection that breaks down most of the time & a quarterback who has absolutely no touch on any pass over 20 yards. He overthrew Mark Bradley twice in the endzone when he was behind the defense, very much like the one to Bobby Wade last week. Cassel doesn't put any air under his deep passes, they have a vapor trail behind them he throws them so hard. The pass Chris Chambers dropped at the 3-yardline was inexcusable, especially for a veteran receiver. I now understand Haley's "53-guys off the street" comment because most of his team plays like they won their roster spots at an open casting call.
This brings me to Scott Pioli. This is the guy who was co-architect of the Patriots? I know he has more experience, more knowledge & a better eye for talent than me, but honest to God, you wouldn't know it by watching this team go in 53 different directions. Their performance the last three weeks would remind most people of an exhibition game, a really bad one, at least it does to me.
Let's move over to the defensive wall Clancy Pendergast has built for us. The Bills, with an offensive line that's probably worse than K.C.'s, ran for 200 yards, something that has become way too common. This was 57 more yards than Pendergast's 11 normally surrender. Both inside linebackers are too small, they overrun the plays, creating major cutback lanes for opposing backs to gash this defense. Giving up 200 yards on the ground to a team with an offensive line that has had 9 different starters & an ineffective passing game, tells me Pendergast is failing in at his job. Denver switches to a 3-4 in the off-season too, Mike Nolan installs 7 new starters & the Bronco defense is light years ahead of Kansas City's. Why? Todd Haley needs to explain why he thinks his defense is so porous. Don't give us 'the process' anymore, it's arrogant, patronizing & no one buys into it, neither the fans or many of your players at this point.
For those of you who found my rant last Sunday "too harsh", remember, I told you I was a good loser, but a poor winner. I'm not being negative, I'm speaking the truth as I know it regarding the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs. I do not watch these games thru rose colored glasses, this is as honest as I know how to be. I'd love to be in semi-gloat mode, but these Chiefs are so far from there. Like other Chiefs' fans, I can only dream of the Derrick Thomas, Will Shields, Tony Gonzalez, Neil Smith, James Hasty, Priest Holmes, Willie Roaf, Trent Green days. Is our current management going to return us to the day when a trip to Arrowhead on Sunday was the hottest ticket in town? The days when it was so exciting fans like myself would fly in from all over the country to see the Chiefs play in Arrowhead. When spending 4 hours tailgating & screaming for the boys in red gave you goosebumps just thinking of it. Anyone out there think this is the right direction?
