BEAVERS A NO-SHOW, MORE PROBLEMS FOR PETE & MORE JR'S JUMP TO THE NFL
I guess if I'm going to be wrong, I'd rather make it a quick death & the BYU-Oregon State game was certainly over long before the final gun. Try 44-20, in a game the Beavers were favored by 2 1/2 & after BYU scored to tie it at 7-7, it was never close after that. It was the worst beating I've ever seen a Mike Riley team absorb. This week's wagers weren't what I was expecting, I guess you can say that whenever you lose 3 of 4, but I was honestly surprised by all 3 losses. Fresno State had an 11-point lead going to the 4th qtr & went to sleep, Wyoming tied the game & won in overtime. The Titans were leading 24-6 late in the 3rd qtr playing at home only to see the Dolphins come roaring back to tie it, only to lose in overtime. Unfortunately, the Titans won by 3 & not the 5 I had laid. The Browns versus the Chiefs was never in doubt & then there was tonight. It's part of gambling, you're going to have bad weekends, I just had one. Time to move on as I am still up for the year.
I have been accused by a couple of readers as piling on Pete Carroll & his USC Trojans.I have to admit, I have taken some joy is seeing someone this arrogant taken down a few pegs. For those who are unhappy with my trampling of the Trojans, better look elsewhere, because I'm going to lay a few facts on the USC faithful. Starting tight end Anthony McCoy, starting defensive tackle Averill Spicer & starting right tackle, Tryon Smith, were all declared academically ineligible for the Trojans trip to the Emerald Bowl on Saturday. If that's not enough, starting tailback, Joe McKnight is not leaving tomorrow with the team. I kept this off the blog until more became known, since I'm such a hater & all, but here's the Joe McKnight story. Numerous students reported seeing McKnight driving a bright shiny new Land Rover on campus the past few weeks. McKnight said the vehicle belonged to his baby mama's boss & he never drove it at anytime. Well more than a few students rejected McKnight's claim. Seems his baby mama's boss is a sports marketing guy. Now he's not on the traveling squad for the Emerald Bowl. When quizzed about this, Carroll said McKnight was needed in L.A. to complete some paperwork. Asked if McKnight was going to the bowl he said "we certainly hope to see Joe up in the Bay Area." Sounds like McKnight is in trouble & he won't be in Frisco wearing a Trojan uniform. Sorry guys, I call 'em as I see 'em.
UNLV surprised nearly everyone who actually cares who is coaching the Rebels, by naming former Montana coach Bobby Hauck as their new head guy in the desert. Don't know much about him & don't feel it's a big issue. This is & will always be a basketball school.
Oklahoma All-Big-12 offensive tackle Trent Williams will take on a new challenge in the Sun Bowl next week. He moved from right tackle to left tackle this season, but he's moving to a totally new spot in the Sooners game with Stanford. Williams will become the 4th center to start a game this season. The previous 3 have all suffered injuries & Williams was elected to make the move. This will be interesting to watch, Williams is thought to be a 1st round pick in next April's draft.
A couple of big name juniors have announced their intentions to fore go their senior seasons & jump to the NFL. Rutgers offensive tackle, Anthony Davis, will make the move. He looks ready enough to go, maybe not ready enough to play. He could slide into the 1st round with a good combine performance. Fresno State running back, Ryan Matthews, the nations leading rusher, will also jump to the NFL. The 5-11 220-lb Matthews is mature enough for this move. He broke 7 runs of over 50-yards this season. He's a decent pass receiver & like many of the junior prospects who experience some sort of injury or injury scare, they want to put themselves into a situation where if they get hurt, they get paid. Certainly not a bad idea. He was shaken up in the bowl game Saturday but returned to play. Jahvid Best, Cal running back falls into the same category as does USC runner, Stafon Johnson, the kid who had a 325-pound weight bar fall onto his throat, almost killing him. When you're risking life & limb, literally, I see nothing wrong with moving to the NFL if you're ready. Ask Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford & TE Jermaine Gresham if they wished they had jumped last season instead of being severely injured this year at OU.
UCLA's best offensive lineman, center Kai Maiava & WR Morrell Presley won't be able to compete in the Eaglebank Bowl next week as they failed to make grades. Florida WR/KR Brandon James, won't play in the Sugar Bowl because of a foot injury he sustained in practice. This is a major loss to the Gators, James is their 3rd leading receiver & a very dangerous return man.
Today's real name of the day: Alvester Alexander, running back, Wyoming.
