ASSORTED PRO NOTES & EVEN SOME STUFF ABOUT THE 'DOORMAT DEFENSE'
Now that this desk chair has become a permanent part of my ass, I figured I'd catch you up on a few more things. I picked the Giants & Steelers to play in the Super Bowl, how's that looking now? Both could get there, it's mathematically possible, but probably even longer odds than my chances of being a cover model for GQ magazine. So who is more likely to go now? If I was given a 'do-over', I think I'd select the Chargers & the Eagles, they're playing well right now, San Diego winning 8 straight & Philly 5 in a row, their last loss came in San Diego.
Minnesota has hit a wall all of a sudden. Adrian Peterson is averaging less than 3 yards a carry the last 3 weeks, the Viking offensive line isn't protecting Brett Favre & coach Brad Childress & his QB are squabbing a little bit. Losing both middle linebackers hurt too.
When we watched the Green Bay-Pittsburgh game Sunday afternoon, we thought a Big-12 game had broken out in Heinz Field. Talk about no defense, how about 883 passing yards between the teams with 6 touchdown passes & zero interceptions. It was like a Texas Tech-Mizzou game wasn't it? I still never got what I considered a believable answer to Mike Tomlin's onside kick call late in the game with the lead. Truly bizarre. Ben Roethlisberger's TD pass to Mike Wallace at the 60-minute mark(Mike Wallace, 60-Minutes? Never mind) tied the game & the extra point after time had expired won the game for Pittsburgh. The Packers look like they will still make the playoffs as a wildcard. With a draft of quality offensive linemen, the Pack could be all the way back, like world champs.
As a confirmed Raider hater, once again I was thrust into the unlikely role of Raider rooter. Mainly because I hate Denver worse than the Raiders at this point. Despite the fact the Raiders played all 3 of their QB's, the all-hands-on-deck method proved to be a winner. I hope someone told the starting QB, Charlie Frye, they won, because he was in another world after sustaining what appeared to be a concussion. Either that or he was doing a bunch of bong-hits on the sidelines. The Raiders ran for 241 yards in Denver, but it was 4th string QB, JaMarcus Russell, the forgotten one, who threw the winning touchdown with less than a minute to go in the game.
The Bengals lost a very emotional game in San Diego on the game's last play, a 52-yard field goal by Nate Kaedding. Carson Palmer looked like he did before his 2006 knee injury, hitting receivers all over the yard. Phillip Rivers, the guy with one of the worst throwing motions I ever saw, is playing lights out football right now, as are his receivers.
Way back in March when the Chicago Bears pulled off what was thought to be a mega-trade, getting QB Jay Cutler from the Broncos. People in Chicago were ready to stand in line for playoff tickets. Cutler threw 3 more interceptions Sunday, giving him 25 for the season. He could throw 30 before the season comes to an end. I'm not wishing anything bad on Jay, but he's playing that bad, he is so much worse than he ever was in Denver. This team has been a major disappointment.
Whoever takes over the mess Daniel Snyder has created in Washington is going to earn every single cent of his pay. This is supposedly the most toxic locker room in the entire league. If you saw any of the Monday night game, you saw a team that was going thru the motions, they've packed it in. Did you ever see a Redskin DB near a Giant receiver when he caught the ball? It was really shameful, what a pathetic effort.
Speaking of picks, Mark Sanchez threw 3 more against Atlanta in the Meadowlands Sunday. He's never played in weather like they had on the East Coast over the weekend. The two home games when it was windy, Sanchez threw 8 interceptions. After October 1st, you don't get those sunny, breezy SoCal days near the New Jersey coast. It's windy & it gets colder & more windy as the season goes progresses.
Brady Quinn, fresh off a blistering 66-yard passing performance against Kansas City, was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a foot injury he claims he sustained on their next to last snap Sunday. The Browns didn't really need big passing yardage versus the 'Doormat Defense' of the Chiefs.
Think Larry Johnson isn't salivating about playing the 'Doormat Defense' on Sunday? He wants to have a huge day against the Chiefs, he's said as much, how does Kansas City stop him, they've surrendered over 800 yards on the ground in the last 3 games. That blackout policy isn't looking so bad now is it?
The Chiefs revolving door at wide receiver continues. They cut Mark Bradley Tuesday & resigned Quintin Lawrence, again. The personnel moves on this team are waaaay beyond puzzling. Tight end Brad Cottam, who had his best day as a pro, 4 catches for 62 yards & 3 first down grabs, was placed on injured reserve with a cracked cervical vertebra. Great, the guy finally makes an impact after being inactive for maybe 8 games, now we're back to Jake "Dropsy" O'Connell. If the tackling by the 'Doormat Defense' bothered you, this will make you feel better. That darn safety that wasn't good enough to play for Clancy Pendergast, one Bernard Pollard, had 11 tackles, 1 for a loss, half a sack & another hit on the QB. But I guess we don't need guys like him do we?
Lastly, I want to say again how much we love our DirecTV. On Sunday we were able to watch the last minute comeback by the Falcons on a Tony Gonzalez touchdown, the Miami comeback for overtime in Tennessee. We saw the last play win in San Diego, a last minute win by the Raiders in Denver & the last play winner in Pittsburgh. Nothing beats a wall full of HDTV's on NFL Sunday Ticket, or college football Saturdays, especially when you have simultaneous heart-stopping finishes, it's great.
