SATURDAY NIGHT SHOCKER: FLORIDA'S URBAN MEYER TO STEP DOWN
As I'm preparing dinner, I have the N. Carolina-Pitt bowl game on & right before a commercial break, the play-by-play guy says "when we come back, we have breaking news that is truly monumental." When they come back he says Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach of the Florida Gators immediately following the Sugar Bowl. They have no explanation, but the Florida A.D. has confirmed it to ESPN. Wow!
So during the half of the Boston College-USC game, both Kirk Herbstreit & Lou Holtz have spoken to Meyer & he has admitted he has a heart valve problem that needs attention. Meyer also divulged he has a benign cyst in his brain that causes headaches under stress. Think coaching at that level causes stress? He told Herbstreit he has chest pain a lot & that he's been to the hospital several times since the SEC Championship game. It was public knowledge he had been admitted the day after the game, but it was reported he checked himself in because he was dehydrated. Meyer told Lou Holtz this evening his father suffered from heart trouble for many years & he doesn't want to put his family thru this with him. Meyer is married, with a daughter at Georgia Tech on a volleyball scholarship & another daughter that's a high school senior being recruited for volleyball as well. He told Holtz he owes it to his family to be there for them. He's right, win national championships should always come second to your family. Here's hoping Meyer lives a long, healthy & happy life.
