FRIDAY THIS & THAT
I'm hearing & reading some real crapolla today. There are some writers, TV talking heads & a few bloggers who are saying today that Colt McCoy didn't return to last night's because he was "protecting himself for the NFL" or "he wasn't going to risk huge dollars to go back in a game he thought they couldn't win." And they know that how exactly? Let's get a few things straight. I feel at best, Colt McCoy is a mid-second round pick. He has a narrow frame that won't allow much more weight, so he will always be considered "undersized". Colt McCoy played hurt while at Texas on several occasions, so to question his courage & pain tolerance at this juncture would be ridiculous. I read a report in the L.A. Times that said he threw 5 passes in the tunnel at half & had "no idea where the ball was going." A shoulder stinger can numb both the lower arm & hand & can last anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours. For people to presume to know how he felt & to the degree he could function as a quarterback is really irresponsible. I wonder if the same people questioning if McCoy was "protecting his investment" where 100% behind Sam Bradford's decision to return to Oklahoma? I sure heard a lot of the same second-guessing when he was hurt. "He was stupid to go back to OU, now he's hurt" & "Bradford has cost himself millions by getting hurt at OU & not in the NFL." Either both were right or both were wrong. To all you Monday morning quarterbacks who have 20/20 hindsight, you can't have it both ways O.K.?
The final Associated Press poll is out & to no one's surprise, Alabama is number one. Certainly no complaint from me. But I do have a complaint as far the number's 2 thru 4. Texas remained #2, Florida moved up from #5 to third & little 'ole Boise State, undefeated at 14-0, finishes 4th. B.S. All these voters were speculating TCU should have been in the national title game against Alabama after Texas barely escaped Nebraska in the Big-12 Championship game. So Boise State wins all their games, holds Oregon without a 1st down way into the 3rd quarter, holds vaunted TCU to 36 yards rushing, pulls their pants down on national TV with a fake punt call deep in their own territory & wins the Fiesta bowl so they can finish 4th? Boise State should drop Broncos as a mascot & call themselves the Boise State Dangerfields. Talk about "no respect at all."
Speaking of polls, the 2010 preseason poll will have Alabama on top as it should, but what about a few of the top-10 staples? I can't see LSU starting that high, Les Miles inherited a great team from Nick Saban when he jumped to the NFL. Those kids are gone & the memory of their national championship is just about faded from view. Back-to-back 9-4 seasons with a bowl loss won't cut it in Baton Rouge. How can Florida be ranked high to start the season? Uncertainty over Urban Meyer's involvement with the team, Tebow's departure, as many as 6 juniors may be heading off to the NFL & defensive coordinator Charlie Strong has already left to take the head coaching position at Louisville. Defensive line coach Dan McCarney is going to be interviewed for the vacant South Florida job which opened up just this morning with Jim Leavitt's dismissal. For my detractors a warning, skip now to the next story, I'm going to"whine about Boise State" as some of you so eloquently phrase it. With 22 starters returning, They had better be ranked in the top-5 to start the season. They play Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Washington D.C. & face Oregon State, so hopefully they'll finally get some respect.
The Chiefs made the Charlie Weis hiring official with a conference call this morning. He & Todd Haley said all the right things. Let's see if Weis is simpatico with a head coach who used to fetch his coffee many years ago.
FOXSports' Jay Glazer is reporting this morning the Seattle Seahawks have fired Jim Mora. Now there are two coaching vacancies including Buffalo. Those in the know say there will be another come Monday when Tom Cable meets with Raider owner Al Davis. Cable remained the good soldier for most of the season, refusing to blame QB JaMarcus Russell, a certified coach killer & WR Darius Heyward-Bey, who Davis selected instead of Michael Crabtree. When the owner saddles his head coach with a player(s) he doesn't want & he remains patient, loyal & quiet, all the while coaching for the league's lowest salary, leave him be. Sadly, that's not Davis' M.O. It looks like Cable will be thrown on the scrap heap of ex-Raider coaches.
I will have my NFL Wildcard weekend preview this evening along with my plays for both days, so come on back tonight.
