MONDAY MORNING NOTES INCLUDING MY BEST FOOTBALL MEMORY

I told you last night to expect Oregon State to sew up an extension with coach Mike Riley so he wouldn't be enticed to talk with USC about their vacancy now that Pete Carroll has resigned. The Beavers signed Riley to an extension this morning that will keep him in Corvallis thru the 2019 season. Riley will be 66 in 2019. It appears to be the lifetime contract he was seeking.

Friday night is the deadline for college juniors & 3rd year sophomores to declare their desire to forego their remaining elligibility & make themselves available for the NFL Draft. There are guys announcing their intentions almost hourly, so instead of mentioning everyone of them as they declare, I'll give you a final list when the deadline passes. Expect the list to be extensive, a lot of superior talent coming out this spring.

Somebody needs to splain sumthin to me. I get it that Peyton Manning won his 4th MVP trophy, I'd vote for him myself if I had a vote. But how does Chris Johnson, the Titan running back, gain over 2,000 yards on the ground & set the all-time yards from scrimmage record as well, not receive one single vote? None, zero, zilch. I don't get it. Brees, Favre & Rivers all received votes but not Johnson.

Since the Chargers lost nose tackle Jamal Williams early this season, they have given up an average of 4.5 yards a carry to opposing ball carriers. I don't see the Jets winning out in San Diego, but if the Chargers can't do a better job of halting the Jets' running game, they will get beat.

Speaking of Jets, QB Mark Sanchez took a nice shot at former coach Pete Carroll who said last winter after Sanchez declared for the NFL "I don't think he's ready for the NFL, I think it's a bad move." Asked about Carroll's move to Seattle Sanchez replied "I don't think he's ready for the NFL, I think it's a bad move." Touché'.

Expect Tom Cable to be fired as Raider head coach. So now the question becomes who will be willing to take this crappy job driving the NFL's biggest clown car?

Before everyone gets all excited about Pete Carroll moving to Seattle, let's examine other successful, high profile college coaches & what they accomplished in the NFL. All of these coaches led top-10 programs, some won national championships, so I'm only talking about the most successful ones, like Carroll.

Jimmy Johnson--Won 7 playoff games & 2 Super Bowls.
Dennis Erickson--Won 0 playoff games.
Butch Davis--Won 0 playoff games.
Nick Saban--Won 0 playoff games.
Bobby Pettrino--Won 0 playoff games.
Steve Spurrier--Won 0 playoff games.
Mike Riley--Won 0 playoff games.

See a pattern here? Just because you might have built & led a national power in college, most times it doesn't translate to the professional level. One more name to throw out there, Pete Carroll himself, who coached both the Jets & Patriots to only 1 playoff win & that was with a Pats' team he inherited from Bill Parcells. I've always thought Carroll was a good defensive coach & a fine recruiter at USC, but I am more than a little skeptical about his future with the Seahawks.

Chiefs fans, this day holds a very special memory for us, it was 40 years ago today Kansas City beat Minnesota 23-7 to win Super Bowl IV. Ah, the visions of Willie Lanier intercepting Joe Kapp & the Len Dawson-to-Otis Taylor pass that sealed the deal. I know it was 40 years ago, but I remember the game vividly, it's been too long since we felt that good.
