CHIEFS GET THEIR MAN, HOW EARTHQUAKE COULD AFFECT THE PLAYOFFS & MORE KIIFIN FALLOUT

I said last night the Chiefs would sign Romeo Crennel to be their defensive coordinator. The only thing holding up the deal was the current defensive coordinator, Clancy Pendergast, how were the Chiefs going to handle his demotion or dismissal? Scott Pioli solved the dilemma by terminating Pendergast's contract. Crennel won't be joining the Chiefs until after the January 23rd East-West Shrine Game, he's the East head coach. So Patriots' Lite is now in full swing at One Arrowhead Drive. Pioli now has two former New England coordinators, Weis & Crennel, under contract & I think the Chiefs will be better for those decisions. Now it's up to Pioli to get these guys the players they can mold into a competitive team, not a Super Bowl team mind you, competitive. Let's get to the where the Chiefs can stand toe-to-toe with anybody in the league & not get blown out, not give up 300 yards rushing, not have 50 dropped passes. Then they can fine tune & tweak that roster to be Super Bowl worthy, hopefully.

Brian Scottenheimer has told the Buffalo Bills he will decline an interview for their head coaching position. The Jets offensive coordinator has made a meteoric rise this season on the list of prospective coaching candidates around the league. The game he called Saturday, aiding rookie QB Mark Sanchez in a 12 of 15 passing performance, can't be minimized. He'll be a head coach before too long.

The horrific Haitian earthquake has left thousands of people in this country heartbroken & worried about family still in the island nation. Two of those Haitians are Colts' WR Pierre Garcon & Niners' DT Ricky Jean- Francois. Garcon said today his mom, who lives in Florida, hasn't been able to contact the rest of their family in Haiti. Francois hasn't heard from his grandmother or 5 cousins living in Port-au-Prince. Without any form of communication still functioning in the devastated country, it's nearly impossible to establish contact with friends or family. Garcon said he is feeling that frustration & his mother's panic. He wants to travel to Haiti as soon as possible. Though it's not first in his heart right now, he has a playoff game with the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night. Tough to focus would be putting it mildly.

One of the very best college football writers in the nation is ESPN's Pat Forde(he's Mizzou grad too). His take of the Lane Kiffin desertion at Tennessee was great, as usual. This morning on ESPN2's "Mike & Mike In the Morning" Forde said "Paris Hilton has paid more dues than Lane Kiffin, he's a coach with a 12-21 record."  Forde went on to say "Kiffin comes across as a guy who was born on 3rd base & acts as if he hit a triple. But given the way people have thrown good jobs at him, it's hard to blame him for thinking he's the next Knute Rockne." I said last night I fail to see the big appeal of this guy & truly feel for the Vol freshman class, who've been left out in the cold by Kiffin's selfishness. The incoming recruiting class is already experiencing defections, 4 kids have bailed out just since last night. Tennessee football is in limbo right now, not a good place to be when the last 4 BCS Champions are from your conference & everyday you don't have  coach or lose a recruit puts your program further behind the front runners.

Not a football note but I find this factoid fairly fascinating, the Big-12 is 114-1 at home during the current basketball season. The lone loss was by Iowa State by 3 points to 15-1 Northern Iowa. That's it, the lone homecourt loser so far this season. Hope that changes tonight, Mizzou travels to Texas Tech.
