COLTS & SAINTS ARE MIAMI BOUND
I was hoping for a Colt-Viking Super Bowl because of it would have been a matchup of two of the game's best quarterbacks of all time. Sadly the Vikings committed 6 fumbles, losing 3 of them. Two of the lost fumbles were inside the New Orleans 10-yardline, one by Bernard Berrian & one by Adrian Peterson. Percy Harvin also lost a fumble & Favre threw 2 interceptions, one with less than 20-seconds left in 4th quarter. The Saints weren't credited with a sack but they laid a beating on Brett Favre, possibly enough to tip the scales toward retirement.
The Vikings outgained the vaunted Saints' offense by 218 yards. Honestly, if the Vikes don't turn the ball over 5 times, they easily win the game. But they did & they'll have all winter to replay the game that should have sent them to the Super Bowl. The Saints were just 3-12 on third down & were out-rushed 165-68. Both of Drew Brees' fumbles were recovered by teammates luckily & New Orleans also benefited from a very questionable pass interference call in overtime followed by a questionable 3rd down catch that appeared to hit the ground. I'm not crying about the outcome, as I said this morning, I predicted the Saints would win & I bet the over 53 1/2, so I was a happy camper.
Overall, I'd say the Saints are going to have to play much better to compete with Indianapolis, if Manning & company didn't impress you this afternoon, I'll guarantee they impressed New Orleans.
The Jets-Colts game was scoreless after one quarter, just the way I wanted it. Unfortunately, they scored 30 points in the 2nd quarter & I figured I was doomed trying to stay under 40 1/2. I hung in till about 8 minutes to go in the game when Dallas Clark caught a Manning touchdown pass. The Jets hadn't given up 3 touchdown passes all season, they surrendered 3 to Manning this afternoon. The Colts showed real patience in the 1st half until they figured out what the Jets were trying to do on defense. They ended up with 461 yards of offense. I told you this morning Pierre Garcon & Austin Collie might come up big in this game. They caught 18 passes for 274 yards & 2 touchdowns, which was huge. The Colts also out-rushed the Jets' league leading running offense 101 to 86. The Jets were averaging 172 a game. Rex Ryan said after the game "there's a reason Peyton Manning is the MVP of the whole league, what did he get today, a billion yards?" Something like that Rex, at least he dropped his bluster to acknowledge the Colts superior play " they were the better team today, no doubt."
It was almost painful to watch Brad Childress, Adrian Peterson & Brett Favre after the game. They were totally spent, you could see the pain in Peterson's eyes, his 122 yards & 3 touchdowns were somewhat washed out by the 3 fumbles he committed. I told you earlier today Peterson has had a lot of trouble hanging on to the ball the last half of the season. Counting tonight, he put the ball on the ground 10 times in the last 10 games, losing 7 of them. Maybe Childress' coaching staff can fix Peterson's fumble-itis the way Tom Coughlin helped Tiki Barber stop fumbling.
Well the matchup is set & the opening line from Las Vegas lists the Colts as a 4 1/2 point favorite with a total of 55 1/2. Unless the line crawls above 6 & barring injury, I'm taking the Colts. I didn't see enough outside of last week that really impressed me about New Orleans over the last 6-weeks. They give up a lot of yardage & their offense can be stopped, I haven't seen Manning stopped over 4 quarters this season. I think the Saints will have to wait yet another year for their first Championship.
