EX-CHIEF BUSTED, THE AKC BARKS AT EAGLES, WARNER TO RETIRE & SENIOR BOWL NOTES
Former Chiefs offensive tackle Chris Terry was arrested & charged with dealing cocaine. Terry played right tackle for K.C. in 2006 & '07 before being suspended by the league for substance abuse(really?) & after the suspension was completed, no one claimed the 8-year veteran. He was also charged with possession of cocaine, DUI, driving on a suspended license & possession of an unregistered handgun. This all went down in his hometown of Clark Indiana. Nice to see that his college education & pro football money didn't spoil him.
Speaking of desperado's, former 5-star recruit Nu'Keese("favorite name of the day" alum) Richardson has moved on from his trouble in Knoxville, Tennessee. The former Vol wide receiver has enrolled at Hampton University in Virginia & intends to try out for the football team in the spring. Hopefully he'll also try to not stickup people with a BB gun. Richardson plead guilty to armed robbery & received 1-year of supervised parole & 2 years unsupervised.
My man Keenan McCardell has new employment, but not with the Buccaneers. He signed with the Redskins to be there new wide receivers coach. I think he'll be a hell of a coach.
The American Kennel Club has officially lodged a protest with the Philadelphia Eagles for giving Michael Vick the Ed Block Courage Award last month. I have to go along with the AKC, I can't see the real courage displayed in playing a game you love for a couple of million dollars, sorry.
Patriot nose tackle Vince Wilfork said Wednesday if he's designated as the "franchise player" it's a slap in the face for his effort, loyalty & commitment to his original contract. The 6-year veteran wants a long-term deal or he wants to be an unrestricted free agent. He said playing on his original contract was the honorable thing to do & now it's time for New England to do likewise. Sorry Vince, I don't see them letting you go anywhere, like Kansas City maybe, wouldn't that be sweet to sign a healthy, Pro Bowl nose tackle? Don't hold your breath Chiefs' fans.
While I'm on the subject of the Pro Bowl, the NFL Network is televising the practice sessions for the Pro Bowl. Are you serious? The Senior Bowl practices are excellent to watch as you can get a glimpse of college talent playing other high-caliber talent all under the watchful eye of NFL coaches & they're playing hard. The Pro Bowl practices on TV? C'mon man, Pro Bowl practices are 90-minutes of grab-ass. Like the game itself, which I haven't watched for at least 30 years, no way I can watch the practices either.
The word around the league is Arizona Cardinal quarterback Kurt Warner plans to retire at a Friday news conference. He has nothing left to prove & should be a first ballot Hall of Fame selection. Won one Super Bowl & gave his team a 4th quarter lead in two others, plus a championship game loss. He is a champion in my book, an undrafted free agent who had a helluva career.
As for the Senior Bowl practices today, I had bidness to take care of this afternoon, so I didn't see the South's practice. But here's what I saw this morning during the North team's practice:
Danario Alexander had a few good moments, but overall he's still struggling to get in & out of his breaks quickly plus he dropped two passes again today. That's 5 in 3 days, I didn't see him drop 5 in 13 games this season. He did a better job of getting off the jam today, pushed Cal CB Syd'Quan Thompson on his ass twice. The other Mizzou Tiger in Mobile this week is making a much better impression. Sean Weatherspoon continued to show his quickness, strength & instincts making several good plays. You have to love his enthusiasm as well, he kept his teammates fired up all morning. Nebraska safety Larry Asante put two big hits on tight ends this morning, he bounced up both times while the guys he hit struggled getting to their feet. He did make a false step toward the line in the play action passing game twice, which can be fatal in the NFL. Arkansas State defensive lineman, Alex Carrington, showed some pop & power as he ran over or thru several different offensive guards today. In fact, one was Shaun Lauvao, a prospect I praised yesterday. Carrington put him on his butt in a bull-rush move that simply over powered Lauvao. Oregon tight end Ed Dickson is making himself known in Mobile. His ability to plant his foot & cut in his break is like that of a wide receiver & he catches everything with his hands. His lack of size may be a problem at the next level, he doesn't have the shoulders or hips to carry much more than the 244-lbs he's already packing. Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard continues to impress me with his ability to break the jam, get into his breaks quickly & catch the ball with his hands consistently. Cincy QB Tony Pike had a hot 'n cold day this morning & the other North QB's, Dan Levour & Sean Canfield have been less than sparkling. Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount looked terrific again this morning till he put the ball on the ground in 11-on-11 drills. Pro coaches are hyper-sensitive to fumbling, fix it or forget it.
Reading a few of the blogs & watching a video from today's South team practice, it appears Shaun Cody, aka 'Mt. Cody', is playing himself out of low 1st round to mid-2nd round consideration. He's too fat, has very little stamina, no pass rush, plays too high & now there are questions about his core strength. Cody needs to lose 40 pounds, put on some muscle & tone his upper body. When he runs it looks like two raccoons wrestling in a burlap bag, there's waaaay too much moving around under his shirt. He couldn't budge center J.D. Walton, a player he outweighs by 70 pounds. Walton also held his ground against celebrated Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams in all 3 matchups in the one-on-one drills. Walton, just a tad over 6' 1", starts low & stays low, winning the leverage battle.
