SENIOR BOWL PRACTICE NOTES & A FEW ONE-LINERS
After watching 7 of the 8 televised Senior Bowl practices, I have a few guys who really impressed me, a few that disappointed & a couple that lived up to expectations. Let's start with the favorable critiques.
Mike Iupati--OG--Idaho--Massive at 6' 5" & 325 lbs. This Samoan strongman is both athletic & quick. I think he could play any offensive line position, he lined up everywhere except center while in Mobile. He even ran down on kick coverage having no problem keeping up with teammates at 325 pounds, very impressive. Very sound fundamentally, excellent pass blocking technique with a very powerful punch. Bends his knees, sinks his butt & you simply can't move him or knock him off balance. Has that mean streak in the run game too. An instant NFL starter in my eyes. Last 2 guards to come out of Idaho you ask? Mark Schlereth & Tom Cable, hmmmmm.
Alex Carrington--DE--Arkansas State--Had never seen this guy until this week, he jumps off the screen. Quick, fast & fierce, Carrington made several bigger name offensive linemen look pretty silly as he ran by them or bull-rushed over them. He has long arms & uses his hands well shedding blockers. I'd say he moved into the top 3 rounds with his performance this week, a good game Saturday could boost his stock even further.
Perrish Cox--CB--Oklahoma State--Displayed superior ball skills all week picking off one pass after another. Great awareness & physical at the line of scrimmage. Good size at 6' & 192 pounds, he can flip his hips & run with the best all week. Really like this kid.
Taylor Price--WR--Ohio--Had seen this prospect only once this season before this week. He made quite an impression with me. He got separation like no other receiver did in Mobile this week. He didn't drop the ball either. He was said to be a low-round prospect, but I have the feeling with a decent performance Saturday, he could be a 3rd-4th round selection.
Kyle Wilson--CB--Boise State--Wilson didn't surprise me at all, I saw the Broncos play 7 times this season. He reminds me of Brandon Flowers, not huge, but tough in run support & very physical in pass coverage. He matched up with Cincinnati's Mardy Gilyard on Thursday & Gilyard couldn't shake him. Wilson is also a dynamite punt returner. He had his number one supporter in Mobile all week. His brother drove his 42-foot RV that is totally encased in Kyle Wilson & Boise State graphics, top to bottom, bumper to bumper. He drove this RV to every Bronco road game, he told NFL Network's Lindsay Soto that he had racked up 20,000 miles following his brother this season.
Those who really disappointed:
Terrence Cody--DT--Alabama--"Mount Cody" as he's known as in Birmingham, Cody needs to shed 30-40 pounds & get some tone in his upper body. He was huffing & puffing after playing 2 snaps. That's not going to play at the next level. He has no alternative to his bull rush if he's stalemated. Cody has some awesome potential, but he'll be "just another guy" if he doesn't rededicate himself. He got by with his extreme size(374 lbs) in college, it won't work in the NFL.
Taylor Mays--S--USC--He stayed in school for his senior season & I think it might have been a waste of time. I don't think he's as good now as he was at the end of last season. He looks stiff when he turns to run, he's indecisive, takes too many false steps & instead of playing the ball, he looks for that "knockout shot", the guy hasn't shown any visible improvement in one full year. He'll go by the 20th pick of the first round, but Mays could be a bust.
Danario Alexander--WR--Mizzou--The guy I touted all season really struggled in Mobile this week. He spent two days just getting off the line when jammed, then he let balls get into his body, didn't catch them with his hands like he had all season. Alexander dropped more passes Monday & Tuesday than I saw him drop all season. The kid who led the nation in receiving yardage didn't look like the same person. He geared down too much going into his breaks allowing DB's to mirror him without too much difficulty. It will be interesting to see how much he improves between now & the combine next month.
Garrett Graham--TE--Wisconsin--First off was his size. Listed by Wisconsin at 6' 4 1/2" & 248, he was measured at 6' 3" & weighed in at just 234. Even worse than being too small, he didn't show any athleticism or strength. He couldn't get off the line & he couldn't catch the ball. Both can be fatal during the scouting process. Right now, I can't see him being drafted at all.
Chris Scott--OT--Tennessee--To heavy, too slow-footed, very slow reactions. People ran by him all week & then when he was moved inside to protect in the "phone booth", he was overpowered pretty consistently. At 346, Scott looks to be at least 20-pounds too heavy, he loses his balance easily, doesn't bend his knees, plays too straight-legged to make a living on Sundays next fall.
Sean Canfield--QB--Oregon State--Thought I was going to tag Tim Tebow as the most disappointing QB, but I knew Tebow's shortcomings before this week. He actually threw the deep ball better than I expected. Played thru strep throat as well. Canfield impressed me the least, he threw one flutter-ball after another, nothing came out of his hand with much steam on it, I doubt he can make half the throws needed to play at the next level. Unless he were to play for a team that employed the West Coast Offense with all it's short, quick patterns, I don't think Canfield has a chance of sticking as a pro.
Two guys who delivered as advertised:
Sean Weatherspoon--LB--Mizzou--"Spoon" ran sideline to sideline making plays, got good drops, played with the proper ferocity & talked the whole time. The only difference from his regular season play was he determined his first step was slightly slower after watching tapes of every game in 2009. He saw that he was a tad slower than his junior season, so he went back to his junior playing weight of 241 & he flies to the ball. He has the enthusiasm to keep his own troops fired up & talks just enough trash to keep his opponents annoyed. Love this kid, he can play any linebacker spot in a 4-3 or 3-4 except I can't see him playing the strongside in a 3-4, he'd be too small. He possesses superior instincts, he just knows where the ball is going & he gets there in a hurry.
Dexter McCluster--RB/WR/KR--Ole Miss--This pint sized dynamo was everything I expected having seen him play 6 times this season. McCluster is a smaller version of Darren Sproles at 5' 6" & 165 pounds. He's very tough, quick & fast. When he plants his foot in the ground, he can turn in almost any direction & be going full speed in 2 steps. Very dangerous in the open field & on kickoff returns, just like Sproles. He was used almost exclusively outside the tackles & is a fine pass receiver, either split wide or out of the backfield. Very exciting player.
Opening the Super Bowl next weekend will be Queen Latifah singing "America the Beautiful" & Carrie Underwood will sing the National Anthem.
Mike Holmgren has indicated Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn won't be on the opening day roster in September, one quarterback will have to go.
It's almost set in stone; a football game at Wrigley Field this fall. The Northwestern Wildcats will face off against in-state rivals the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois. I think it's been over 40 years since football was played at Wrigley.
The Chiefs announced there wouldn't be an increase in ticket prices except for those with contracts in the club level. After their 6-26 record the past 2 seasons, this was a wise decision.
Ram running back Stephen Jackson is about to have a bad day. It appears he will be charged with assaulting his 9-month pregnant girlfriend last March. Supriya(cool huh?) Harris claims Jackson grabbed her by the throat just a week before their son was born. So why did it take 10 months to make an issue of it? Both Ms. Harris & Jackson state he has kept up with his child support & sees his son regularly, so I'm guessing it's about money. Hey, I'm certainly not being smug about someone accused of roughing up a pregnant woman or any woman for that matter, I'm just skeptical when we're talking about millionaires & ridiculous time lapses.
