COWBOY GUNSLINGER IN TROUBLE, JOE THEISMAN'S IRRELEVENT & YOU CAN RENT BARRY SANDERS
Cowboy Deon Anderson decided to pull his gun the other night outside a saloon & the sheriff put him in jail. The Dallas fullback was having a beef with a parking valet outside the Black Finn Bar & Grill early Monday morning. Two Dallas off-duty cops working security for the upscale eatery watched Anderson pull a gun from his car & brandish it at the valet. They intervened & Anderson tossed his gun in the bushes. Police recovered the 9mm & found it loaded & a round in the chamber. Anderson was arrested on several gun charges. When are people going to learn this isn't the old west or the gang wars of prohibition.
Dwight Freeney continues to miss practice but insist his injured ankle is improving. Stay tuned, I think he's going to play more than a lot of people believe. I'll have my Super Bowl breakdown tomorrow, don't miss it.
USC made a late surge last night getting a commitment from the #2 player in the country, Seantrel Henderson & that put the Trojans into the number 1 ranking for this season's national signing day. One thing Lane Kiffin neglected to mention until Henderson's dad mentioned it to the press, Henderson didn't sign a commitment sheet for USC. His commitment is verbal only. Henderson father said they wanted to wait until the NCAA investigation into the Trojan football program was completed & USC was in the clear. When asked about this omission, Kiffin replied "oh yeah, but it's just a formality, there's no way they have anything." Maybe they don't, maybe they do, I thought the Henderson's decision was interesting.
The Boise State program took a hit yesterday as their longtime defensive coordinator, Justin Wilcox, has departed for the Tennessee Volunteers. He will take the same position for the Vols. I was always impressed with the Bronco defensive discipline, if he can get the superior athletes Tennessee recruits to buy into his scheme, this might be one of the best defenses in the nation within 2 years.
Joe Theisman has spoken, he the all knowing expert of everything football, has passed judgment, this time on Tim Tebow. Joe said today "Tebow should have retired from football after the Orange Bowl, his rock star status preserved. Florida & Urban Meyer don't know the first thing about teaching players to go on to the next level, they've never been good at turning out quarterbacks." This is from a guy who was similarly dismissed when he came out of Notre Dame way back when. He was a 4th round pick, was cut & went north to the CFL for 3 seasons. He returned to play in Joe Gibb's Redskin offense that had interchangeable QB's & RB's. His three Super Bowl Champs over nine seasons featured 3 different starting QB's that had little success elsewhere, Theisman was one of them. His lifetime stats of 160 touchdowns & 138 interceptions with a QB rating of 77.1, speaks for itself. His QB critiques mean little to most people, the best thing to happen to televised football in the last few years is that Theisman is no longer part of it. His big mouth & even bigger ego isn't missed. I heard Deion Sanders say today "people like Tim Tebow, who have succeeded at every level should never be discounted. It might take him a couple of years, but he'll give it his best shot. I doubt he'll be a second Peyton Manning but you can't say he should have retired from football after college, that makes no sense." Deion's absolutely right, the guy led a team that won 2 BCS Championships, he won the Heisman Trophy & was a finalist last year. Maybe Joe's jealous, maybe not being in the spotlight bothers Joe. Whatever the reason for this idiotic outburst, keep it to yourself Joe, no one's listening.
How would you like to have Barry Sanders at your Super Bowl party? It can happen. Sanders is auctioning himself off to appear at a private party for 4 hours on Sunday. All the money will go to the V Foundation, a cancer research charity founded by the late North Carolina State basketball coach, Jim Valvano. The price is currently up to $9,000, still time if spending 4 hours with one of the greatest runners in football history would make your party better than the neighbor's shindig.
