A LITTLE GOOD NEWS, A LOT OF BAD
Sam Bradford is at the top of quarterback class for April's draft for more that just his ability to throw accurately. He scored the highest of the quarterbacks who were tested at the recent combine on the Wonderlic Test. Of a possible 50-points, Bradford scored a 36, which is a very good score on this 12-minute test. His main competition at the QB position, Colt McCoy & Jimmy Clausen both scored 23, while Florida's Tim Tebow scored 22. Other famous quarterback scores include Terry Bradshaw & Dan Marino with 15, Donovan McNabb a 9 & Vince Young the lowest ever at the position, six. The test measures a person's ability to use logic to answer questions as fast as possible.
The Chiefs signed wide receiver Jerheme Urban, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. Is it just me or does it seem like former Patriots, Cardinals & now Browns are filling our roster? Originally from Trinity(Tx) College, a Division III school, Urban also played with Seattle & Dallas. The 6' 3" 212-pound Urban caught 18 passes last season with no touchdowns. While playing for Todd Haley, he caught 56 passes & 6 TD's. Rookie Early Doucet had supplanted Urban as the Cardinals 4th receiver last season. He's 29-years old.
Chad Ochocinco, Cincy wideout, will be "Dancing with the Stars" this season on ABC. He will miss some of the Bengals OTA's & mini camp because of it. Now Chad has signed a deal to be part of a reality dating show, "The Tournament" on VH1 this summer. When is it going to be about football again? I don't know a lot about the show's format except to say VH1 brought you Terrell Owens' reality show as well as "Jersey Shore." Nuff said right?
Willie Clark, the gang member charged with killing Denver defensive back Darent Williams New Years Eve 2008 out side a club in Denver, was found guilty today after 12 hours of jury deliberation. This outstanding citizen can't be sentenced soon because he's been charged in another capitol murder case totally unrelated to this shooting.
Pro Football Hall of Fame member Merlin Olson died today at age 69. He had contacted mesothelioma & was bravely fighting the associated cancer when he passed away this morning in his hometown of Logan, Utah. Olson attended Utah State & won the Outland Trophy in 1961 as the nation's best lineman. He was the 1962 NFL Rookie of the Year winner & made the Pro Bowl his first 14 seasons in the league. He was a first ballot Hall of Fame selection in 1982. He filed a civil lawsuit against NBC earlier this year for exposure to asbestos while filming "Little House on the Prairie", a series he was a regular on for years. Olson appeared in movies & television in the 70's & 80's. He was paired with Dick Enberg on NFL telecasts as well.
Today's last two items are sickening to me, I hesitated a while before I decided to put them on this page. Tony Washington, an offensive tackle from Division II Abilene Christian, recently wowed scouts at the combine in Indianapolis. But I kept hearing "he has that off-field issue" over & over without really knowing what that issue was. Now that I know, I'm kinda sorry I was so damn curious. In 2003, when Washington was 16 years old, he was charged with having sex with his biological sister, who was 15 at the time. When questioned about it during personal interviews at the combine, Washington said that where he comes from, Louisiana, that happens more than you would think. Not exactly a 'Chamber of Commerce moment' for the Bayou State & it certainly doesn't make it right. That's the part that bothered the two teams that would talk about Washington, they wondered if he really believes it was wrong. That one pegs my disgust meter.
This is just as distasteful. During a radio interview, Millegeville Georgia cocktail waitress Kaylie Reeves was asked what the recent Ben Roethlisberger incident had done to business in the small town.
"I don't think people are upset. We have been busier in our restaurant than we were previously, you know before the incident. So it's helped our business. That's been the plus side of it."
I wonder if this young woman had any regrets after hearing a tape of her radio interview? God, let's hope so. It turned my stomach when I heard it.
