STEELERS DUMP SANTONIO, IS BIG BEN NEXT?
This morning it was confirmed Santonio Holmes has violated the league's drug policy & would be suspended four games this season. This is his second such violation, he has a pending civil suit from a woman claiming he threw a drink in her face, cutting he face with the glass & added to his domestic violence beef in 2006, the Steelers decided Holmes had to go. They began making calls around the league yesterday to gauge his trade value. They claimed to have "called everybody" except the teams in their own division. They took, last night, what they claim was the best offer, sending Holmes to the New York Jets for a 5th round draft pick. Now the Jets have 2 problematic wideouts, Braylon "Butterfingers" Edwards will now be paired with Holmes, after he completes his 4-game suspension. The Jets are rolling the dice, both receivers are in contract seasons, meaning both have contracts that expire at the end of this season. Holmes has played for a team that is predominately a running team & he's played with a higher profile wide receiver, Hines Ward, But this will be a challenge for Edwards, he's always been "the guy", despite all the dropped passes. He tends to whine a bunch too, so this could get rather tedious about mid-season when the Jets are running the ball 45 times a game & Holmes is taking passes away from Edwards. The Jets are also gambling that Holmes will all of a sudden become a solid citizen after showing over & over, he's anything but.
Millegeville District Attorney Fred Bright just announced he will not file charges against Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He said "the charge of sexual assault can not be proven without a reasonable doubt in court." The investigation was conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation & the Millegeville Police Department since the alleged incident occurred on March 5th. Bright added "on the night in question, the alleged victim was taken to a Millegeville hospital & was examined by doctors & a rape kit was completed. After the swabs from the rape kit were analyzed by the G.B.I., it was determined there was male DNA present but the sample was so small, it wouldn't allow a proper profile indentifying anyone. In a letter from the victim & her attorney that I received on March 17th, they made it clear they didn't want to pursue this case any further." He also mentioned an extremely high blood alcohol level without specifying what the actual reading was. Many witnesses told authorities the alleged victim was extremely intoxicated, as were two friends of hers. The bartender said Roethlisberger had bought them several rounds of drinks. This behavior had occurred at another establishment earlier in the evening. Tho he won't be prosecuted, I expect he will be suspended by the league or at the least, suspended & fined by the Steelers. With a civil suit already pending in Nevada, this "near-miss" will place Roethlisberger firmly at the top of Commissioner Roger Goodell's sh*t list. Deservedly so.
Thanks to Martin Manley over at The Kansas City Star, I was asked to write a 5-part series on the state of the Kansas City Chiefs & their draft options to run on their site Upon Further Review.
