MONDAY NOTES
BYU's all-time leading rusher, Harvey Unga, has left the program & school, admitting to an honor code violation. The school has numerous rules that every student must adhere to, no pre-marital sex, no drinking or smoking etc. His girlfriend, Keilani Moeaki, a BYU basketball player, also resigned from school. Both submitted their resignations on their own, nothing had come down from the university. Unga, a 6' 239-pound power running back, said he will now prepare to enter the June NFL supplemental draft in hopes of playing this season.
Ohio State had their spring game Saturday & it wasn't pretty, the only score came on the recovery of a botched shotgun snap. QB Terrelle Pryor didn't have a good day, 5 of 15 for 45 yards. Pryor spoke after the game regarding the new NCAA rule concerning written massages on eye-black strips. He believes his message supporting Michael Vick last season is the reason the rule was instituted, he takes full blame for this new, totally ridiculous rule. It might have a little to do with it, but it was the reason. More bad news coming out of Columbus, one of their 4-star recruits is in free fall right now. Let me explain. According to the Columbus Dispatch, defensive lineman Jamel Turner of Youngstown Ohio has had a bad, uh....15 months & it's gotten worse as time goes along. He was kicked off his Youngstown High's basketball team in January of '09. The school wasn't interested in him representing the athletic department in any other sport either so Turner transferred to Fork Union(Virginia) Military Academy. He played football in the fall but was kicked out of the school in March for unspecified reasons. He is now attempting to get his GED with correspondence courses. Saturday night Turner was shot twice while sitting in a car in Youngstown. He suffered non-serious wounds in the ankle & hip. Police found two loaded handguns & a bag containing pot in the car. Ohio State officials have issued no comment other than the usual "we're gathering information right now." Decisions, decisions, decisions.
I watched the Alabama Crimson & White spring game Saturday. Heisman winner Mark Ingram looked supper, busted a 60-yard run at one point. How popular is Nick Saban's defending champs? How about 91,000+ fans in the stands Saturday afternoon? Oh that's popular, real popular.
At Nebraska's spring game, future first-round draft pick Ndamakong Suh made an announcement, he is pledging $2.6 million in donations to the university. He will give $2 million to the athletic department's strength & conditioning program, benefiting every sports program at the school. He also pledged $600,000 to go to the school of engineering general scholarship fund. Suh has a degree from that school in construction management. He did make one request, if a student from his high school in Oregon applies for engineering school, they go to the head of the line for any financial assistance.
My wife will be dismayed. The "Smurf Turf" found only at Boise State will be replaced. Sadly for her, they're replacing it not because they don't like the color, it's going to stay the same, they didn't like the glare the old turf created in night games. It was annoying, the glare that is, not the color. Linda hates watching games in Boise because of the color, it really bothers her. It really bothers a lot of people, including visiting teams, which is a good thing. There is no other playing surface I've ever seen quite like the one at Bronco Stadium.
Don't expect the NFL or the Pittsburgh Steelers to announce their disciplinary action on Ben Roethlisberger until Wednesday. Tomorrow the league is going to roll out their 2010 schedule, they don't want anything to overshadow it. The draft begins Thursday, so Wednesday figures to be the day of reckoning. I think he'll get a minimum 4-game suspension, he better or I think there's going to be quite a backlash. I think he's going to have to enter some sort of counseling in an effort to find out why he makes the decisions he does regarding women. Many of the Steeler fans might not ever accept him again. He's permanently damaged his brand, it will be a very long time, if ever, he receives dollar one for any type of endorsement. This is going to be a distraction for a very long time.
The Broncos purged the last player suspended last season by coach Josh McDaniel. Tight end Tony Scheffler was dealt to the Detroit Lions today in a 3-way trade. The Lions sent LB Ernie Sims to Philadelphia & the Eagles gave the Broncos their 5th round pick to complete the deal.
I'm also working on continued draft previews with the defensive front seven to come later today, so c'mon back.
