VERY INTERESTING 1ST ROUND, WHO DID WELL & WHO'S LEFT FOR TOMORROW NIGHT?
The first 4 picks went exactly like I wanted & then my own team crossed me up. The Chiefs selected Eric Berry, admittedly a great prospect, just not the one I was wanting. But that's why Scott Pioli is making a coupla million a year & I'm doing this. I sincerely hope he's right, I'm sick of watching this franchise stink up the place. I've already gotten a bunch of comments & email tonight, all asking about the Chiefs. So instead of answering each of you individually, I'll give you my best guess as to what K.C. will do tomorrow night at the end of this post.
There were a bunch of trades tonight, seven in all, they're both inevitable & impossible to predict. So who did well & who left me scratching my head?
Seattle & San Francisco both had two first round picks & they did equally well in my opinion. The Seahawks picked up Russell Okung, my #1 tackle & Earl Thomas, the Texas safety. Pete Carroll got off to a good start in his return to the NFL picking future starters on both sides of the ball. Frisco coach Mike Singletary made a statement tonight & it was "we're going to run the ball." Selecting Rutgers tackle Anthony Davis & Idaho guard Mike Iupati drove home that point.
A few more 'perfect fits' go to Pittsburgh picking interior offensive lineman Markice Pouncey, Green Bay stealing Bryan Bulaga with the 23rd pick. He was ranked higher by everyone including me, he's a Packer-kind of player. Indy taking TCU edge pass rusher, Jerry Hughes with pick #31. He will rotate with Dwight Freeney & Robert Mathis, a great spot for Hughes to excel. Titans selected Derrick Morgan, Ga. Tech DE, which was a perfect choice for the type of team Jeff Fisher has. Same for the Eagles choice of DE Brandon Graham, altho when they traded up, I thought it was for S Earl Thomas.
A special tip of the cap goes to the Cowboys for trading up in front of Baltimore to grab Dez Bryant. Jerry Jones always regretted passing on Randy Moss 11-years ago when he totally ignored the scouting reports of his personnel people. He vowed to never make that mistake again on such an impact player & tho I don't think Bryant is as good as Moss, he still made his team a lot better with this move.
Even the Raiders surprised me by not doing anything stupid. Alabama's Rolando McClain will be a terrific MLB in this league. I was shocked they didn't take a left tackle, but McClain is a stud.
The Jaguars selection of Cal DE Tyson Alualu left me scratching my head. No one & I mean no one, had Alualu anywhere above pick #25, most people had him as a mid-2nd rounder. I like him a lot, but with the 10th overall selection, he better be a knockout.
The Jets already have the best pair of cornerbacks in the league with Darrelle Revis & Antonio Cromartie. So when they took another corner, Boise State's Kyle Wilson, I grunted a big "huh?" I love Wilson, but with their need for a pass rusher, the pick didn't register with me.
But the biggest head scratching moment of the evening was Denver's trade back into the 1st round to tab Tim Tebow with the 25th pick. For the privilege of drafting Tebow, Josh McDaniels surrendered a 2nd(#43), a 3rd(#70) & a 4th(#114). This one could be a career-buster for McDaniels. This was a major move for a prospect who's nowhere near ready to play in the NFL. Picking Damaryius Thomas when Dez Bryant was still on the board was another risky move.
So who's left for the Chiefs? They have 2 selections in the second round & one in the third. Minnesota acquired Detroit's 2nd round pick in a trade, #34. So now the top of the 2nd round looks like this:
33. St. Louis Needs include WR, DT, OLB & a backup RB
34. Minnesota Needs include QB, S, CB & RB
35. Tampa Bay Needs include DE, WR, CB & strong safety
36. Kansas City Needs include OLB, WR, NT, TE, OL & ILB
50. Kansas City
My top-rated players still available:
Sergio Kindle OLB - Jimmy Clausen QB - Golden Tate WR - Arrelious Benn WR - Colt McCoy QB - Rodger Saffold OT - Rob Gronkowski TE - Nate Allen FS - Koa Misi OLB - Cam Thomas NT - Terrence Cody NT - Damien Williams WR - Taylor Mays FS - Linval Joseph NT - Vladimir Ducasse G - Daryl Washington LB - Dennis Pitta TE - Sean Lee ILB - Everson Griffen DE - Brian Price DT - Jon Asamoah G/C - Corey Wooten DE.
You can look at the listed team needs & match up players from above & you might be able to project who will take who. I like Kindle, Tate or Benn with pick #36. I like Misi(if we don't get Kindle), Joseph or Pitta for pick #50.
In round 3, I like Torell Troup NY - Ricky Sapp OLB - Eric Decker WR - Jared Veldheer OT.
