THE "LOVE TRAIN" IS OUT, EMINEM TRASHES BIG BEN & SAINTS SHOULD LEARN IF YER IN A HOLE, STOP DIGGING

After eight long years of enduring the same two commercial themes, Coors Light is out as the official beer of the NFL. No more fake news conferences with former coaches, no more "Love Train" disco music. Coors was outbid by Anheiser Busch to become the official beer. Not really earth-shattering news, but since I have been drinking Budweiser since, well, let's just say a long time, I've always preferred their commercials to those of Miller or Coors. Bud Light especially. Now for real football news.

The Cumberland River has crested to 12' above flood stage in Nashville Tennessee. The death toll is 28 right now, it's really a tragedy, affecting hundreds of thousands of people. Most of the downtown area is underwater. LP Field where the Titans play is a mess. The field has 6' of standing water on it. The electricity in most of the downtown area is out, so the club couldn't run the pumps that were keeping field above water. No longer, I saw the stadium up close this afternoon on TV & it was really sad. The team had notified their season ticket holders their renewals & their 1st payments were due yesterday. Because venturing downtown is really dangerous right now, the Titans announced the renewals weren't due for at least another week, possibly longer.

Frisco inside linebacker Patrick Willis hit the lottery today, signing a 5-year $50 million deal. He is one of the toughest tackling machines currently in the NFL. When coach Mike Singletary, himself a Hall of Fame linebacker, says Willis could eventually be called one of the all-time greats. He's one of the best players you've never heard of. I'm guessing most football fans aren't familiar with Willis, the Niners seldom play on national TV, so his exposure is definitely limited. If you get a chance to see San Francisco this season, you'll see a player who plays at such a high level, you'll become a fan of Willis quickly.

The rapper Eminem is now taking shots at Ben Roethlisberger. Ben, it's really gone bad hasn't it? I'm not defending Roethlisberger, his actions lately are indefensible, but when Eminem, a real solid citizen in his own right, starts trashing you in his rap, I think you've just about hit bottom. I'm not going to print the 2 lines  in question, the language isn't appropriate, but suffice to say, Ben, the Steelers & their fans aren't impressed.

The Big-12 finally moved into the 21st century, 10 years late. They are installing high definition LCD screens in their replay booths. Wow, a conference that generates over $250 million in football revenues, springs for $12,000 in flat screen TV's & that's news? They're over 3-years behind the rest of the football-replaying world & they have to issue a press release to announce this triumph of technology. Kinda pathetic.

The Saints continue to call former director of security Geoffrey Santini's suit, extortion. When you force an ex-FBI special agent to resign because he has evidence of prescription drug abuse by the head coach & one of his assistants, ignoring him isn't a good business model. Then attempts to marginalize him by calling his allegations "extortion" further demonstrates very poor upper level management. In the lawsuit filed Friday by Santini, he mentions video of linebacker coach Joe Vitt helping himself to Vivodin out of a locked cabinet. He mentions attempts to change the logs kept by Saints' trainers & required by the federal government. He mentions face to face meetings with the owner & the general manager. Even the lamest of TV cop shows have guys wearing a wire to record incriminating conversation, think Santini is capable of this? Now the DEA & NFL Security are involved, the Saints are looking at a couple hundred thousand dollars in legal fees in addition to people losing their jobs, bad P.R. & the possibility of hefty fines. Good decision, when you're in a hole, stop digging.
