PACMAN HAS ZERO TOLERANCE IN CINCINNATI & YOUR QUESTIONS

The PacMan Jones experiment has begun in Cincinnati, he was signed by the Bengals on Monday. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer made it known to Jones he could cut himself by running off the rails. According to Marvin Lewis, it was made crystal clear he was under a policy of zero tolerance in regard to his behavior. This is Jones' last shot at an NFL career, the former 6th overall pick of the 2005 draft has been in trouble since he left Virginia Tech. The Bengals already have two pretty decent corners in Jonathan Joseph & Leon Hall, both snagged 6 interceptions last year, so realistically, Jones will probably do no better than the nickel spot. That's if he can stay out of trouble.

The Alex Barron for Bobby Carpenter trade I told you about on Friday happened on Monday. The Cowboys needed depth at left tackle & Barron no longer had much support in St. Louis, maybe a change of scenery will motivate a career underachiever. Going from the Rams to the Cowboys might do the job. As far as Carpenter's future in St. Louis, possibly playing next to fellow Ohio State Buckeye James Laurinaitis will help, I've always thought he was terribly overrated. Let's see what happens, for my buddy Chuck H.'s sake, I hope he works out in the Gateway city.

I read a stat yesterday that is really all you need to hear about the failure of JaMarcus Russell in Oakland. In seven starts last season, Russell led the Raiders to 55 points. In his last 31 quarters, he threw exactly one touchdown pass. ONE, that's all. So far, his phone hasn't rung with an offer, oh someone will bring him for a look during camp, but he won't play in the NFL this year.

Houston linebacker Brian Cushing, suspended for violating the leagues policy on PED's, claims he took a lie detector test & passed it. Cushing said the polygraph test proved he didn't use any PED's. O.K. maybe he didn't use PED's, but there are other substances that will cause a person to test positively. He doesn't deny he used any of those substances, just PED's. The press in Houston is hammering him, telling him to come clean & tell the truth about what caused this positive test. The AP is considering revoking his Defensive Rookie of the year award, which they can do. After Shawne Merriman did exactly the same thing, they considered it but now that it's happened twice in 4 years, you might see them give the award to the 2nd place finisher, Buffalo cornerback Jarius Byrd.

And now to your mail:

To Jared - You had a good thought on Japanese sumo wrestlers being a good fit for the NFL. They could play nose tackle, but that's about it, they have explosive power in their legs & are superior hand fighters. But they only do well going forward, not laterally or backward, which wouldn't work as an offensive tackle. When I lived in Japan('72-'74) I saw a lot of sumo on TV & even once in person, I doubt they could run 25 yards at full speed without taking a nap. They are conditioned for that 5-20 second combat, once a day, not NFL stamina to be sure. I will tell you I don't think you could make a living drive blocking a sumo on 3rd & 1, it's really tough to move them.

To Carla in Iowa- To your question regarding the removal of Lawrence Taylor from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the answer is no. He can't be removed for the same reason O.J. Simpson wasn't removed, the only criteria the HOF uses for inclusion is performance on the field & behavior off the field during their playing career. Once they're in, they're in for life, regardless of how big a scumbag they become after their induction.

To MikehatesHerm - Thank you for the props & no I'm not a new Chiefs' fan, I'm pushing uhhh, let's just say I went to the very first Chiefs game in Kansas City. It was in 1963 & I was in the 6th grade at the time. So I've been around since the beginning of the franchise.

To Red Dog in Kansas - Could Thomas Jones beat out Jamaal Charles for the starting spot? Absolutely, Jones gained 1,402 yards last season & 1,312 in '08, so yes he has the skills to start for the Chiefs. I'd certainly rather have Charles taking the bulk of the snaps tho, he's lightening in a bottle, at 32, Jones won't bust off too many 40-yard runs. I'm really happy he's a Chief tho, tremendous depth & experience.

To Barrack O'Brien of Pennsylvania Avenue(sounds like a phony to me) - You're completely right, Ben Roethlisberger hasn't been charged with anything. But he's already been convicted in the court of public opinion & that's one that doesn't have a system of appeals. Worse yet, he has the commissioner looking over his shoulder from here on out. What Roethlisberger is truly guilty of is stupidity. Stop putting yourself in situations where bad things can happen. Real simple, is having a quickie with a drunk coed worth $6.9 million? Because that's what he has to lose & that's just this year. At just 26 years old, he has a lot of high-earning years left, provided he can keep it in his pants. If it's proven his wreck & 4 concussions are part of the cause for this behavior, I'll retract my criticism. I used to be a huge fan of Big Ben.

To JElwaystheman - You're absolutely right, I do hate the Broncos, you just now caught onto that? I never hated them until your boy Elway arrived on the scene, he beat the Chiefs so many times & most of them in the 4th quarter. I never thought I would hate a team more than the Raiders, but yes, Denver passed them about 12-13 years ago. Hey, I'd like to thank you for not calling me an idiot in this email, that's a first isn't it? Maybe you just forgot. By the way, it's my opinion, Elway is the greatest QB of all-time. See, I hate the Broncos but I respect many of their great players.

To Hawksforever - I thought Seattle had a great draft, maybe the best when all is said & done. Yes, you're right, I'm not a Pete Carroll fan, but maybe he learned his lesson from his first stint in the NFL. I'm not on board with the Charlie Whitehurst trade & I wonder how many more hits Matt Hasselbeck's back will take. Pass rush is a question too with Kearney's retirement & Hill's eventual suspension.

To Brent in Oklahoma - You made good points, but I was already sold on OU's big-3, QB Landry Jones, RB DeMarco Murray & WR Ryan Broyles. Yes, I think they can rebound & take the Big-12 South.

To Lonnie in Maryland - Thank you for finding this site, come as often as you can & ask all the questions you like. As to my thoughts on your Ravens, I like them a lot, I figure they'll win the North & could go much further. Getting Boldin for almost nothing, moving Oher, getting Reed healthy & a superb draft class make them my front runner to win the AFC. The Jets should provide plenty of competition but their schedule is much tougher than last year when the went 11-8(counting the playoffs). The Pats could be a player too, but a lot of holes to fill & I don't know that they filled them.

To all those who want a football glossary, it's coming. For the people who suggested my all-time Chiefs' team, it's almost finished, had to enlist a very astute friend who's as old as I am to cross check my picks.
