A CLOSER LOOK AT A RECENT CHIEFS' SIGNING, OCHOCINCO SAYS ADIOS & HERM GETS DISSED
So you probably know the Chiefs signed a few guys from their tryout weekend, the most notable was Kansas State defensive end, Jeffrey Fitzgerald. The 6' 3 1/2" 270-pound former Wildcat was a decent pass rusher but I saw a guy who needs extensive weight room work, he got pushed around too much. He did register 7 sacks in '09. He played only one season in Manhattan, transferring from Virginia. The other three were So. Miss TE Leroy Banks, Notre Dame WR David Grimes & cornerback Andre Jones of Akron. Looked thru my notes but couldn't find anything on the last three. But here's something you may not know, Tuesday, they signed Cory Greenwood, a linebacker from Concordia College in Montreal Canada. He was the 3rd overall pick in the recent Canadian Football League draft. He passed on what had to be a pretty sure thing with the Toronto Argonauts to sign a free agent deal with the Chiefs. This might be something worth talking about, let's not confuse Canadian players with a linebacker from the SEC, but as the 3rd overall pick, he could be a player coming from a population of 33 million. He has the right size for an inside linebacker at 6' 2" 235. The last player Kansas City brought down from Canada was Joe Horn & he worked out pretty well, so I'm going to be cautiously optimistic for now.
Also on the Chiefs' front, OTA's started Monday & they were missing probably their 2 most promising young players. Jamal Charles & Brandon Flowers, both recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, were present but weren't going to participate. Todd Haley did nothing to illuminate anyone, refusing to talk about either player. I have no doubt they'll be ready very soon, these two played much of last season with these shoulder injuries & didn't miss much playing time, they're plenty tough.
Buccaneer tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. is missing more practice time with his 5th knee surgery in 3 years. After his motorcycle crash in 2007, he needed an operation to repair his ACL, then had microfracture surgery later in the year. The procedure he underwent last week was being referred to as an "arthroscopic clean out of the scar tissue from previous surgeries." Any time missed working with 2nd year QB Josh Freeman could hinder his progress.
Chad Ochocinco said adios to "Dancing with the Stars" last night. He finished fourth in the competition, certainly a good showing, especially considering he was really raw when the season began. But Chad kept after it & really looked like a dancer the last few weeks. My girl Erin Andrews, ESPN sideline reporter, is still alive for next week's finale along with Olympic Gold Medal ice skater Evan Lysacek & Nicole Scherzinger, a professional entertainer. Get 'em Erin.

Jets owner Woody Johnson gave an interview Monday evening & if I'm Herm Edwards, I'm pretty embarrassed. When asked about Edwards' stint as Jets' head coach, Johnson replied "Herm is great on ESPN. He was probably the best speaker I've ever heard, brilliant, just brilliant. A lot of enthusiasm & he kept himself in great shape." But what about Herm as an NFL head coach? I don't think that will ever happen again. He should be glad he landed on his feet with gainful employment with the Worldwide Leader. By the way, I think he's worse as an analyst than he was a football coach. But Woody's right about one thing, he does look like he stayed in great shape.
Back by popular demand, yes it's "The Real Name of the Day." I'm going to start you off with a 3-spot to get back into the groove. Enjoy them & check back this afternoon for my All-Time Chiefs Team, the second stringers.
Laquintas Wallace - Texas Tech - freshman running back.
La'el Collins - LSU - junior offensive tackle.
Jermauria Rosco - LSU - sophomore defensive end.
