MORE FALLOUT FOR BOWE, URLACHER SHOULD BE QUIET & COULD TROJANS LOSE THEIR '04 TITLE?

Dwayne Bowe is quickly becoming persona non grata(Latin for "unwelcome person") amongst his peers around the NFL. Bowes' remarks in the newest issue of ESPN The Magazine are reverberating around locker rooms league-wide. Why? Because some of his 2007 Chiefs' teammates, now with other teams, are having to answer questions regarding Bowes' statements. Bowe told The Magazine many of his veteran teammates in 2007 arranged for girls to stay in the team hotel, later visiting the players' rooms for "companionship." Former Chief & current Saint, Jimmy Wilkerson totally rebuked Bowes' remarks yesterday. "He is way out of line saying veteran players arranged females to be in the rooms. The teams have security on every floor, that kind of thing just doesn't happen, I have no idea where he got this stuff. It makes life miserable for us married guys, I've been married for over 8 years & I've already had to answer a lot of questions at home."  Former Chief cornerback Patrick Surtain added "I think even if he knew this was true, anyone knows you don't tell a magazine, I think he just violated a code for every NFL player." Anyone who knows me personally, knows I don't approve of extra-marital goings-on. But I just don't see the sense in blabbing such a tale to a media outlet, what possible good comes from it? Now in addition to his 4-game suspension last year, his weight issue that set him back, his all-too-frequent dropped passes & his constant occupancy in Todd Haley's doghouse, one has to wonder is he going to mature this season or is his time with the Chiefs nearing the end. I know his act is wearing thin with Kansas City fans & I have to believe it's the same for Clark Hunt, Scott Pioli & Haley.

Trent Green has been added to the Chiefs' preseason telecasts this year. Their exhibition schedule includes games at Atlanta & Tampa Bay followed by Philadelphia & Green Bay visiting Arrowhead.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, when you're in a hole stop digging. Earlier this week Gale Sayers was asked what he thought about the state of the Chicago Bears. Sayers gave his thoughts, one of them being his concern for Brian Urlacher's recovery from a wrist injury "at 32, it's tough to come back from injury." The next day Urlacher came out swinging with "how many times did Gale Sayers go to the playoffs?" Really bad idea dissing Sayers, one of the most popular Bears of all-time & a Hall of Famer. Urlacher's remarks provoked two of Sayers' teammates, Dick Butkus & Mike Ditka. Neither had anything nice to say about the Bears or Urlacher, especially his disrespect for Sayers. Another former Bear player, Hall of Famer Dan Hampton, said "Buddy Ryan used to say we're not in the football business, we're in the business of winning football games. If you lose, you can't be thin-skinned & right now the Bears aren't winning." I have said it here before, Gale Sayers is my favorite football player of all-time, if you weren't fortunate enough to see him play, you missed the most exciting running back ever. As a rookie in 1965, Sayers gained 1,374 yards(in 14 games) with a 5.2 yards per carry average, caught 29 passes with a 17.5 average, returned 16 punts with a 14.9 average & returned 21 kickoffs with a 31.4 average. He set the all-time record for rookie touchdowns with 22 & he set the single game record with 6 in one game(both records still stand). Both Ditka & Butkus made it clear if Sayers hadn't been seriously injured, he'd have a slew of all-time records & Urlacher should be quiet in their opinion. I agree, Sayers was stating an opinion, he wasn't criticizing Urlacher but Urlacher responded with a personal shot at Sayers, not a smart thing to do in Chicago.

Gale Sayers(Mike Ditka is #89)

I told you sometime ago about Senators Orrin Hatch of Utah & Max Baucus of Montana questioning the power of the BCS & why the FBS(Football Bowl Series) teams were the only NCAA sport, mens or womens, without a playoff system to determine a champion. Yesterday BCS Director, Bill Hancock, responded to their concerns with a letter that was both dismissive & snarky, he might as well have told the lawmakers to "stick it." In this completely patronizing, 5-page response, Hancock might as well have signed a declaration of war with our federal government. His letter didn't really explain much of what the senators asked for, instead he lectured them. Senator Hatch responded today, "Today we learned what most of the country all ready knew, the BCS is biased, secretive & harmful to schools & competitors. Our letter gave them an opportunity to reply with openness & transparency about how the BCS system really works. In response, we got an arrogant rebuke & a series of incomplete & evasive answers to a very simple question."  I'm no fan of our elected representatives in Washington, but this is the way the BCS treats everyone. College football fans, more than half of the 120 FBS schools, the media & now the Senate. I would love to see this arrogance knocked down a peg or two, they have been the "bully on the block" for far too long.

The NCAA has completed their investigation of the 2003-2007 USC Trojan football program & the news might not be good. There is growing speculation the Trojans could lose their 2004 National Championship because of financial gifts to Reggie Bush while he was at USC. This team put a 55-19 beatdown on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl for the BCS Title. If the NCAA rules Bush ineligible, they will have to forfeit every game he participated in & vacate the national title. Expect a decision within 2 weeks.
