ANOTHER GREAT WILDER IN FLORIDA, SCOUTS COMMENTS ON KC'S D-LINE & IS LANE KIFFIN WORTH $4 MILLION?
Former Mizzou Tiger, James Wilder, is still the career rushing leader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He ran for 5,957 yards & caught 431 passes with the Bucs. He was a hammer, a power runner, superb blocker, just tough as hell. He was on a bunch of really bad teams for the most part, but he was one of the most dependable backs in the league back in the 80's. Now we'll be able to see another Wilder, James Wilder Jr., in 2011 at some Florida college. He's still undecided as to what college he will attend, but it will be in the state of Florida. I've read multiple reports that have Florida State & Miami in a dead-heat. The 16-year old is almost as big as his father was as an NFL player at 6' 2" & 220 pounds. He plays running back & some occasional linebacker. I can still recall Dad's 4-touchdown performance at Nebraska in a 35-31 Tiger victory, he literally ran over 3 Husker defenders inside the 10-yardline to score the winning touchdown.
I told you last week Trent Green is going to be part of the crew telecasting the Chiefs' preseason games. What has come out in the last couple of days surprised me. According to The Chicago Tribune, the Bears offered Green a job as the backup to Jay Cutler. New offensive coordinator had experience with Green way back in his St. Louis days. The Bears have only Caleb Hanie & 6th round draft pick Dan LeFevour as backup quarterbacks. Green, who retired in 2008, told Lovie Smith thanks but no thanks. Considering all the concussion problems Green experienced in his career, this seems like a very smart decision on his part.
I'm going to go easy on Ohio State head coach Jim Tressell for a while. His wife had to undergo emergency open heart surgery last Thursday. Tressell missed the Big-10 meetings over the weekend in Chicago. As someone who has had this surgery, spousal support is critical for proper recovery, I know I had the best & it makes a huge difference. Also on the mend are Frank & Cheryl Beamer. The Virginia Tech head coach fell getting off a private plane & tore a biceps muscle in the fall. Then last Thursday, his wife Cheryl fell at home with devastating results. She was carrying a 2-year old grandchild when she tripped over the family pet & went crashing onto a tile kitchen floor. She kept the toddler safe during the fall but she sustained a broken collarbone, 6 broken ribs & had to have pins put in both legs due to fractures. These two had a bad month didn't they? Speaking of coaching couples, Mark & Mary Jane Mangino put their Lawrence Kansas home on the market & very quietly moved to Naples Florida. They spent some of the $3 million settlement he received to resign as the Jayhawk's head football coach to buy a new home.
I've been taking quite a beating here & on a couple of other websites for my views on the Chiefs' defensive front seven. Just today I was called retarded & stupid on another site & that doesn't include the stuff I can't print I've received here. Nice to see we can be free to express ourselves without fear of accountability. It's truly the downside of the internet, say whatever outrageous crap you want about someone & do it anonymously. O.K. guys, go to ESPN.com, click on the NFL page & then click on the AFC West blog. You will find a report by Scouts Inc. regarding the Chiefs' defensive line. You can read it, it's very short & quite clear in it's conclusion. I will quote two lines from the report, "Dorsey's game just doesn't translate well to this scheme." The second is "This is one of the most wasted resouces in the league right now." So please write to Scouts Inc. & ESPN & call them retarded & all kinds of obscene names, thereby proving your superior football knowledge. I assume that's the way you want to make your point, it's the way you always do it with me, insults & curse words. Brilliant discourse, absolutely brilliant.
Also on the Chiefs' front, 2009 4th round selection, Donald Washington, has been taking reps at safety instead of his former position, cornerback. Washington looked clueless last season despite his superior athletic skills & speed. He's kinda small for safety at 6-0 195. Jarrad Page continues to ignore the Chiefs' tender offer as a restricted free agent, so he can't be a part of the OTA's. The Chiefs are very thin at this position even with #1 draft pick Eric Berry. In the "I-told-you-so" column, tight ends Brad Cottam & Tony Moeaki are unable to participate in the OTA's because of injury rehab. Two guys who desperately need a lot of reps with Matt Cassel sit on the sideline because they can't stay healthy. For those who ridiculed me about my criticism of the Moeaki pick in the draft, is this is the start you were looking for out of your prospective starting tight end?
So Lane Kiffin, USC's new head coach, makes $4 million huh? He of 12 total coaching victories in his illustrious career. He's making as much as Les Myles, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, less than Mack Brown but more than Jim Tressell, coaches that have won at least one national championship. He won 5 games as the Raider coach in 20 games, then went to Knoxville to register a 7-6 record with the Volunteers. This has translated to a $4 million annual salary? Go figure.
Just when we thought the New Jersey bid for the 2014 Super Bowl was a lock, it has proven otherwise. Now after three rounds of voting, there hasn't been a winner. Miami is out, but Tampa is still in versus the New Jersey bid. It has been a case of cold-weather panic, several owners worried about a game with empty seats because of weather. To me, a Super Bowl affected by the weather is no different than a regular season game or playoff contest that is affected by weather. It's about money, just like everything else nowadays.
BULLETIN: at 3:24 CDT, team owners approved the New Jersey bid for the 2014 Super Bowl.
