ARRESTED ON THURSDAY BACK ON THE FIELD FRIDAY, BOWE CONTINUES TO BURY HIMSELF & SHARPER VS. SHIANCOE, ROUND 2
Some of the crap that goes on in the NFL day after day, week after week, just screams of hypocrisy. What it boils down to is winning & money, that's about it, the league tries to put a good face on it, but all you have to do is pay attention & you'll see what I'm talking about. For instance, yesterday, Dolphin defensive end Phillip Merling was arrested for domestic violence for knocking his pregnant girlfriend around, battering her around the face causing bruises & a split lip. He was charged with aggravated battery against a pregnant woman. Bailed out by 6PM, Merling was back on the practice field today. No cooling off period, no team-mandated counseling, just get back out there to practice. Plus, it appears Merling received special treatment from police as they allowed him to slip out the back of the jail to avoid a reporter. The sheriff said today he's looking into this change of jail protocol. Regarding merlings' behavior, if one of my friends had done that to a woman, much less a pregnant woman, I not want to be in the same locker room as I couldn't stand to look at his face. Miami coach Tony Sparano said he wasn't a judge & it was up to the league to discipline Merling if he needs it. I remember when Bill Parcells took over as the head personnel man in Miami & he said "he wouldn't put up with any thugs or thieves." So where is Bill hiding? The Chargers distance themselves from a safety caught with 100-Vicodin tablets that he had no prescription for or explanation of how he got them. Yet they shelter wide receiver Vincent Jackson who has twice plead guilty to DUI within the last year. Is Jackson more important to the Chargers? Yes, he is, but please don't tell me how much the league cares about personal conduct, these sanctimonious diatribes about the "integrity of the league" & how it's "a privilege to play in the NFL" that sort of crap. It's about winning & money, personal behavior barely counts.
In other Miami doings, wide receiver Devon Bess has told fellow wideout Brandon Marshall his #15 isn't for sale. Marshall wanted it when he came over from Denver in a pre-draft trade. He told the press after arriving in South Florida he was going to "make him an offer he can't refuse." Apparently Bess isn't Jack Woltz(the guy with the horsehead in his bed in The Godfather), he can refuse. Bess said they had a meeting & he told Marshall it wasn't about money, he has worn #15 since he was in middleschool & he wants to keep wearing it, regardless of how much money Marshall offered. I honestly can't remember this happening, especially turning down such a high-profile player like Marshall.
Dwayne Bowe should just walk away from anyone with a notepad or a tape recorder, it just hasn't been good for him. Last night he told a reporter he was grateful to the Clarks & wanted to appologize to them. The Clarks????? How about the Hunts? As in Clark Hunt? It got worse with "I love playing for Charlie Rice." Would Charlie Rice actually be Charlie Weis? Wow. ESPN said today they would play Bowe the tape of his interview but wouldn't release it publically provided he quits saying he was misquoted. Realistically if this had been Ochocinco, T.O. or Randy Moss, we would have already heard the tape, but Dwayne Bowe isn't a big enough name nationally for it to be much of a story. Apparently ESPN isn't going to stand by while Bowe claims he was misquoted. I mean "the way he took it was totally not the way I said it" right? Whatever that means. This goes for Dwayne Bowe, Dick Blumenthal & Joe Sestak, when you're in a hole, stop diggin'. Shut up, you're just making things worse.
The College Football Hall of Fame announced the list of 14 newly elected members & while many of them are household names, one, Arkansas center Ronnie Caveness, was an unknown to me. He played for the Razorbacks from 1962-64. The rest include former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez(noted craps player & all-around good guy), A&M & 'Bama head coach Gene Stallings, former Heisman winner Desmond Howard, former Sun Devil & Az Cardinal, the late Pat Tillman, killed as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. Sam "Bam" Cunningham of USC, QB Mark Herrmann of Purdue, DT Ray Childress from Texas A&M, Jerry Stovall of LSU, Randy Cross(my wife's least favorite football broadcaster) of UCLA & Alfred Williams of Colorado were also elected. Dennis Byrd, a DT from N. Carolina State, Clarkston Hines of Duke & Chet Moeller, a defensive back from the Naval Academy round out this years' class. Dez Howard should have been selected long ago & the inclusion of Pat Tillman was a very popular choice. Congrats!

Pat Tillman

Former Cowboy starting left tackle, Flozell "the Hotel" Adams, has paid a couple of visits to Denver, working out for coaches the second trip. This behemoth really isn't suited to play in Denver's very active zone blocking scheme, but what two visits tell me is their starter, Ryan Clady, might not be ready for opening day. Clady injured his patellar tendon last month & tho Josh McDaniels tried to put a good spin on the injury, there were many who doubted that quick of a return to action. Clady is Denver's best O-lineman, even if he has a tough time blocking Tamba Hali & anytime lost would be a problem for the Broncos. Denver has three more injuries of concern. First round draft pick wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, 3rd round selection, WR Eric Decker & right offensive tackle Ryan Harris. Harris is rehabbing from last season & should be ready by opening day, he better, especially if Clady is still ailing. Thomas & Decker figure to push for a lot of playing time & the OTA/mini camp time they're missing will make their rookie impact that much harder.
New Seattle coach Pete Carroll traded for one of his old players, RB Lendale White, on draft day & White was so excited to both get out of Tennessee & play for his former coach. White showed up for Seattle OTA's weighing only 219, a loss of 30 pounds from last year & it really impressed the coaching staff. Unfortunately, he didn't impress his old coach enough because Carroll waived him this afternoon. It just became known in the last 20 minutes, White will be suspended for the first four weeks of the season because he failed to comply with the league's drug policy. It is unknown whether the Seahawks knew of the pending suspension. There has been talk that even tho White came into the OTA's having dropped 30 pounds, he wasn't in decent shape & that disappointed Carroll.
Also from the Pete Carroll file, former USC safety Taylor Mays, said today he was going to let bygones be bygones, but "he hopes Carroll can be more candid in the future." Mays is pissed Carroll encouraged him to return for his senior year because "you'll be a top-10 pick just like you would if you went into the draft now(after his Jr. year)." Mays would have been a top-5 pick after his junior season in my opinion. But after a lackluster senior campaign, he fell all the way into the 2nd round, the 49th overall pick, to San Francisco. That fall cost Mays something in the neighborhood of $20 million, honestly. He is also P.O.'d Carroll passed on picking him twice after telling him he was "very interested in making him a Seahawk." Truth be told, Mays had a very disappointing senior year, he didn't look like the same player from '08 who was a human wrecking ball with speed. Last year he looked tentative in coverage, out of position way too often & for a top-rated safety to only pick one interception in 2 years, you really question his instincts & reads. I was fearful Kansas City was going to take him. Glad he's in Frisco & not Arrowhead.
New Orleans safety Darren Sharper said last week when he learned of Brett Favre's ankle surgery, "X marks the spot." A veiled reference to guys aiming at his ankle. The Vikes open the season in New Orleans in a rematch of the NFC Championship game of last January. "X marks the spot" refers to a target for the Saints. Today Visanthe Shiancoe, Favre's tight end, said "didn't Sharper just have knee surgery? I guess X marks the spot for him too. What he ought to worry about is keeping me catchless. He can't hold me under 3 catches, I guarantee it." For the record, Shiancoe caught 4 throws in January's game.
It is May 28th & the Chicago Bears have already signed all of their draft picks. Third round selection Major Wright, a safety from Florida, signed today & they're finished. Unheard of to be sure. The Bears only had 5 picks, but they're all signed, putting them way ahead of every other franchise. Very impressive, I doubt it's ever been done, signing your entire draft class before Memorial Day.
To Ethan: Thanks for reading & the nice words, but I gotta tell you, I'm not very computer savvy. I have no idea what an RSS feed is. If you can enlighten me, maybe it can happen.
To Wyatt: Thanks for reading, Natalie texted & said she's a sucker for guys who live in their mother's basement, so I think you got a shot.
To Diana: Thanks for reading, but with the curse words you used in your comments, I will not post them. I should have made it more clear after your first obscenity-laced comment. I get that you're unhappy with me even without the foul language. Please keep sending in your comments, I am honestly interested in your feedback, just please clean them up a little.
To Jackson: Thanks for reading, yes I am the guy you think I am at the other site. I haven't posted anything since earlier in the week. People over there get way too worked up & what should be intelligent argument dissolves into snarky, snotty comments when someone who disagrees with me runs out of ammunition. The only thing they have left is name-calling & personal insults which don't further any discussion. I'm glad you're here now & hope I can keep you coming back everyday.
