USC MOUNTS AN APPEAL WITH THE NCAA, TOP POT'S NEW TAG LINE & MIKE VICK COULD BE FINISHED IN THE NFL
The NCAA handed down the findings from their 4-month investigation on June 10th & it only took two weeks for USC to file their appeal. The Trojans are looking for a reduction in every sanction imposed by the NCAA. They are requesting the 2-year post season ban be reduced to 1-year. The 30 scholarships the NCAA has said they must forfeit, 10 per season over 3 seasons beginning in 2011, is also a spot they're looking for relief, once again requesting the penalty be cut in half, 5 per season over the same period. In a related story, Vikings wide receiver & kick returner, Percy Harvin, has revealed that as a high schooler being recruited by USC, the team member designated to show him around the campus was Reggie Bush. Harvin said Bush never picked him up at the motel & he sat in his room for most of the weekend. Harvin signed with Florida a few days later. Bush was out to dinner with the sport's marketing creep who forked over something like $300,000 in cash & goods to Bush & his folks. Remember last week when Bush talked about his "lifelong loyalty to USC?" Right.........
Former LSU safety Chad Jones, a 3rd round pick by the New York Giants, was involved in an automobile accident early this morning in his hometown of New Orleans. He suffered a fractured left leg & other injuries were described as "exposed nerves & arteries in his leg." Sounds pretty grim, a hospital spokesman said surgeons were struggling to save his leg. Details of the accident aren't known but there were two others in the car with Jones & thankfully, they weren't severely injured. Jones was a relief pitcher for the Tiger baseball team that won the College World Series last year & he was also a member of the BCS Championship team for LSU in 2007. Tragic.
**UPDATE at 6:20PM CDT - Chad Jones has emerged from the operating room after over 7 1/2 hours. The early report is blood flow was restored to his foot, so his surgeons are cautiously optimistic about Jones keeping his lower leg & foot.
Knucklehead running back for the Buffalo Bills, Marshawn Lynch, continues to mystify the general public with his behavior & the things he says. When asked by ESPN.com what was going on with his absence from Buffalo's mini camp & OTA's, Lynch opened his mouth really wide & managed to stick both feet in with no trouble. His answer was as follows: "I'm excited to see what the Jets are going to do, I'm real excited." He thinks they will be his team in Madden 2010, a video game. Amazing.......
Speaking of Knuckleheads, remember a few weeks ago the story of former Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate & his brilliant decision to enter a Seattle doughnut shop at 3AM with a friend to scarf down a bunch of maple bars, the house specialty. Unfortunately for Tate, the business doesn't open until 5AM & he litterally scared the woman, preparing that day's supply of fresh doughnuts, half to death. The shop, Top Pot, a coffee & doughnut institution in the Seattle market, refused to press charges against Tate & his pal. Tate apologized to the team, his coaches, the fans but not to the lady he frightened with his break-in. Now Top Pot has a new tag-line in their ads, "Top Pot, irresistable, but please wait until we're open." The doughnut cooker is still waiting for her apology.
Michael Vick might have played his last snap in the NFL during a recent Eagle mini camp. Tomorrow is Vick's 30th birthday & last night he was given a big party in Virginia Beach at a downtown club. At some point during the festivities, former high school teammate & co-defendant in the dog-fighting trial, Quannis Phillips, appeared at the party. Vick & Phillips were said to have had quite a confrontation over his birthday cake. As the club closed just after 2AM, a fight broke out on the sidewalk outside & Phillips got shot. Police said tho their were numerous witnesses, no one is talking. A spokesman for Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital said "Phillips is in good condition with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound." Vick's attorney, Larry Woodward, said Vick had nothing to do with the shooting & was gone by the time it occurred. Here's the possible pitfall for Vick, he's on Federal probation which prohibits him from associating with any of his co-defendants in the case. Phillips also plead guilty & received the same 21-month sentence as Vick. If the government determines Vick violated his parole, he might be right back in jail for another year & Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, would have no choice but to bar Vick for life. Goodell made it clear Vick had zero margin for error when he was reinstated last year. If the story is true, this could be considered crossing that "zero tolerance" line. It also makes a mockery of his public service announcements, the lectures to high school kids condemning bad decisions & his claims of total accountability. I think the fact that no one will come forward & tell the police exactly what transpired outside the Guadalajara Club, speaks volumes about accountability. In other words, there is no accountability for Vick or his crew. Sorry? No, just sorry we got caught.........again.
