IF NOT VICK, THEN WHO? ELWAY WANTS A PIECE OF THE PIE & I'LL ANSWER YOUR MAIL

So what happens if the Eagles cut Michael Vick or the NFL decides it's time for him to go again? That question is aimed at the Philadelphia Eagles, Vick is currently listed as their 2nd quarterback, behind starter Kevin Kolb. The Eagles very unceremoniously dumped longtime starter Donovan McNabb in a pre-draft trade with division rival Washington. Coach Andy Reid immediately installed Kolb as the starter even tho he has but 3 career starts. Vick was the Wildcat QB plus he was going to serve as Kolb's backup, but with the goings-on Thursday night at his birthday party, he could be out as the Eagles #2 option. So who'd be next? The only other quarterbacks the Eagles have on their roster are a pair of rookies, Mike Kafka of Northwestern & Joey Elliott from Purdue. Not only will Kolb need to get off to a good start, he'll need to remain healthy, Kafka & Elliott aren't any kind of an option now. This is a moot point if Vick dodges another bullet & keeps his job as the backup. When asked by a reporter, at his youth football camp on Saturday, what advice he gave the camper, Vick responded "watch what you do, pick & choose your friends carefully. You just can't put yourself in vulnerable situations." So what Michael is saying is "don't do as I do, do as I say." He knew damn well he was on a short leash, pun intended, with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell & the federal government & yet he makes ridiculously bad decisions. Is it stupidity or arrogance? Probably a bit of both. A Virginia Beach Police spokesman said this afternoon witnesses from the Thursday night party remain "completely uncooperative."

Here's a little-known fact for you, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is known for putting the ball on the ground too often, but here's a stat that amazed me. Of the 17 regular season fumbles Peterson has suffered, all 17 of them are against Green Bay, Chicago & Detroit, NFC North Division opponents. Granted the Vikes play this trio twice a year, but all 17 against them? Is this a fluke or do they know something about prying/knocking the ball loose the rest of the league doesn't?

In an attempt to avoid injury, Chiefs' backup quarterback, Brody Croyle, has added 9 pounds of muscle in the off-season. He said he'd like to put on another 5 next season, which would bring him up to 220 pounds. Croyle has had injury problems since his sophomore year at Alabama & they've continued as a Chief.

The New Orleans Police have the results of blood tests from Chad Jones, who was injured in a horrific wreck early Friday morning. He is now in stable condition & is expected to be able to walk again. Whether he can run & play football again is unknown. Jones was a 3rd round draft pick last April for the New York Giants & the results of this test may determine just how much he can expect to receive from the G-Men in 2010 compensation. He is schedule to make the rookie minimum of $320,000 having already received an $800,000 signing bonus. If the tests show alcohol or drug issues, the Giants can hold some or all of his payment. I think the tests will show Jones was clean in both regards & will get the pay from his rookie contract. Next year? Well that's a whole other issue altogether.

John Elway wants to own a piece of an NFL franchise, specifically the Denver Broncos. He recently sold all of his car dealerships for $80 million, so he's as liquid as he's going to be. Bronco owner Pat Bowlen has admitted publicly he has early onset of Alzheimer's Disease, so I guess there's the possibility he might bring Elway on board. Old number 7 had been estranged from the Bronco family the last few years of the Mike Shanahan regime, to say they didn't see eye-to-eye would be an understatement. But with his departure, Elway wants back in the fold. I'd be looking over my shoulder if I was Josh McDaniels, Elway doesn't want to coach, but he can be hyper-critical & he's not shy about his criticism.

Now to answer a few of your emails.

To DangerousDan: Thanks for reading, yes, I believe Utah can compete in the PAC-10. Since the BCS was formed in 1998, Utah is 19-11 versus BCS competition & 7-3 over the same time period against the PAC-10. They beat Cal last season & Oregon State the year before & let's not forget their thrashing of Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. With USC down for a while, it gives the Utes a shot. Joining the conference also opens up the state of California for recruiting. As a full-fledged PAC-10 member, they'll have a realistic chance to sign some of the better talent in the Golden State.

To KCKrissy: Thanks for reading, answering your question regarding teams that will disappoint in the NFL is tough right now. I'll be better able to give you a solid opinion after the preseason. But I will say right now, the hype surrounding the Jets & Cowboys intrigue me, the same way everything leading up to last season was over-hyped for USC & I said they'd run into trouble. I had no idea it was going to be this bad, but I did say they wouldn't be as good as predicted. I'll make it clear in about 8 weeks.

To MMoats: Thanks for reading, yes I think Albert Haynesworth is a bad actor. Most guys dream they'll get a huge contract, one with an 8-figure guarantee, like Albert received($41 million guaranteed). But when you sign a contract, there's no mention of a specific offense or defense, whatever they come up with, with your signature you've agreed to play in whatever scheme they come up with. He acts like playing in this 3-4 defense will hurt his production, it probably will, but he's already got the money, he's not depending on production to get a monster contract. I honestly have questions about Albert's desire to play in any scheme for any team.

To Diana: Thanks for reading, I do believe your Huskers can be very competitive in the Big-10. I've thought for a couple of years the Big-12 was playing better football than the Big-10 & Nebraska is certainly part of that since Bo Pelini came on the scene. It will be interesting to see how they divide up the conference into 2 divisions. The Huskers are more physical than most Big-10 teams & they can challenge athletically as well. Developing quarterbacks will be key to their chances in their new conference. See, we can talk without all the nasty name-calling, thank you for that.

To MSGT Flores: Thanks for reading, yes I do plan to visit the Chiefs' training camp for a few days in mid-August & it's my intention to give you daily updates as well as some photos. I won't be able to catch more than 1 practice at Mizzou, next year I hope to spend 3-4 days in each camp. Because this site generates such huge money(I make zip, it's the wonderful benefits that keep me here) I have dreams of hitting 4-5 training camps in the next few years as well as the Hall of Fame induction of Will Shields. But that will be up to my accountant, the one I've been married to for 34 years. She'll go too, Linda loves football, bless her heart. Stay safe over there & we'll watch a game or a practice together sometime when you get back to the world.

My bud, who's been on the Chiefs' sideline for over 25-years snapping pictures, sent me a photo of the new press box at Arrowhead. All I can say is wow, talk about the nose-bleed section, it appears to be 60-80' higher than the previous location. The vantage point from the old press box was near-perfect, now that's double-decker suites & the press box is on top of the upper deck. So if you've ever watched a game from the top row of just about any stadium, you sort of have an idea of what the view would be.
