A COUPLE OF NEWS ITEMS THAT CAN'T WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW
This part of the off-season is painfully slow for any meaningful news regarding our favorite sport, but two news items I have to pass on before I retire for the evening.
I harped about bad karma for USC last summer & it kinda came true didn't it? That karma had a little kick left & it really created poetic justice for the Trojans. After Lane Kiffin left the Tennessee program in complete disarray, leaving after just one season in Knoxville to head West for his "dream job" in L.A. Now the Trojans have been dealt some severe sanctions by the NCAA & many of their flock are considering bailing out for a team that doesn't have a 2-year bowl ban hanging over their head. Defensive end Malik Jackson, a junior, has made his decision & he's going to transfer to......drum roll please..........Tennessee. How perfect is that?
I said a few weeks ago when the Raiders cut JaMarcus Russell, their starting quarterback & the #1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, he could become known as the biggest flop in NFL draft history. He gave any doubters to his title of 'King Dud' yet another reason to give up on the former LSU Tiger. After an undercover investigation, Mobile County Sheriff's officers raided his Alabama home & he was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance. They found a quantity of codeine syrup in his home & he has no perscription for the drug or a license to dispense it. This syrup is used to mix with soft drinks & hard candy for a drink known as "purple drank" or "sizzurp" down south, it's popular within the Hip Hop community. Russell posted bond & was released but is scheduled to be back in court for possible indictment & a bail hearing July 20th. I'm fairly certain Russell has played his last football in the NFL. Somewhere out there, Ryan Leaf is lying on his couch with a smile on his face, JaMarcus has officially replaced him as the #1 bust in league history.
