COTTAM OUT, NOW HE'S BACK IN, BERRY SAID TO BE CLOSE, TEBOW SIGNS, SO DOES 'SPOON & DOES CARSON PALMER HAVE ENOUGH BALLS?
On Wednesday, the Chiefs released tight end Brad Cottam. Thursday, after clearing waivers, Cottam was resigned & put on the regular season PUP list. He won't be able to play or practice until week six of the regular season. At that time the Chiefs will have 3 weeks to either activate him, release him or place him on season-ending injured reserve. Until then, he won't count against the Chiefs' roster. ESPN's Adam Schefter said tonight Kansas City & 1st round pick Eric Berry were very close to signing a deal. Let's hope so, training camp workouts begin in earnest on Friday.
Denver signed the second of their 1st round draft picks, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. His 5-year deal was worth $33 million, with $11.25 million guaranteed. Their first selection, WR Damaryius Thomas remains unsigned. Oakland signed their 1st pick, Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain, New Orleans signed cornerback Patrick Robinson, their 1st pick. Also signing on the dotted line was Eagle 1st rounder, Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham & cornerback Devin McCourty by the Patriots.
All that time in the Mizzou weight room & film study paid off Thursday for linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. The Atlanta Falcons signed their 1st round selection, the 19th overall pick in the draft, on Thursday to a 5-year deal worth $17.4 million with $10.4 million guaranteed. Since 'Spoon is capable of playing all three linebacker spots, I expect him to start very early on with the Falcons.
You know when a 350-pound lineman fails a team's conditioning test, it's not all that unexpected, but when a rookie running back flunks one, it raises a collective eyebrow around the league. Joe McKnight made a bad impression with New York veteran players with his mini camp screwups, dropped passes & puking. This is the guy Jets' fans expect to fill the void in the depth chart created by the release of Thomas Jones, now a Chief & the draft day trade of Leon Washington. The Jets also signed Ladainian Tomlinson for depth. McKnight has Jet vets rather unimpressed so far.
Speaking of 350-pound linemen failing conditioning tests, Baltimore rookie Terrence Cody passed his conditioning test on his 2nd attempt on Thursday. He's free to begin regular practice with the Ravens. Washington's problem child, the $100 million man, Albert Haynesworth, also failed his conditioning test on Thursday. He & head coach Mike Shanahan reportedly had words regarding the test. Haynesworth has already received nearly $30 million on the contract he signed in 2009, I don't see the Redskins putting up with a lot of Haynesworth's antics. It's possible he could be traded for a middle round draft pick, he's not a Shanahan-type of guy. He doesn't want to play nose tackle in a 3-4 defense & that's exactly where defensive coordinator Jim Haslett wants him. Something's gotta give.
Another conditioning problem, Cincinnati offensive tackle Andre Smith is sidelined again, this time for 2-3 weeks. The 2008 SEC Man-Boobs winner(the 2009 winner is Terrence Cody), held out as a rookie & after finally signing, he went to Cincinnati overweight & out of shape. He broke his foot & basically missed all of last year. He has once again come in overweight, out of shape & the foot he broke last year is causing him trouble. This kid had all the natural talent in the world, he was so light on his feet, but he lost his lust for the game somewhere near the end of his senior year at Alabama & he's just not the same player.
The Arizona Cardinals began camp in Flagstaff Thursday while their home field, University of Phoenix Field, sustained some damage from a storm. The ceiling was said to be falling in several places, high winds were the culprit. Security personnel said large pieces of the roof came crashing down to the field, no one was injured. It will be Saturday before the club knows just how long repairs will take.
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed 13-year veteran offensive tackle Flozell "The Hotel" Adams. They were in the market for a veteran after starting left tackle, Willie Colon, sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon during a Steeler OTA. Adams was the Cowboys starting left tackle for over 10-years & I think he'll start at one of the tackle positions in Pittsburgh.
In a story that is sad, but expected, the New York Giants waived 3rd round pick Chad Jones on Thursday. Jones survived a horrendous automobile crash in his native New Orleans in June, nearly losing his left leg. It was apparent he wouldn't be able to play in 2010, but the jury was still out on his long term prognosis. Unfortunately, his agent opened his big mouth a few weeks ago, saying Jones might go back to baseball when he recovered. He was a relief pitcher for LSU's College World Series winner in '08. Those remarks probably hastened Jones' release. He will forfeit all of his base salary, but will retain his $825,000 signing bonus, thankfully.
Listening to Lane Kiffin twist in the wind at the PAC-10 media day, was something to behold. Kiffin hymned & hawed for nearly half an hour in the media room. He repeatedly told reporters he couldn't talk about the lawsuit filed by the Tennessee Titans against Kiffin, O-coordinator Kennedy Pola & USC. Then he proceeded to pontificate on his interpretation of the suit. Kiffin believes the litigation wasn't because Jeff Fisher was upset with him(Fisher claims that was it exactly) but because "of the Titan's geography, you know the state they're in." Kiffin ran out on the University of Tennessee after just one year on the job so he could take the vacant USC job. He's easily the most hated guy in the state. After reading the text of his time at the podium, I have to believe new athletic director Pat Haden had his shorts in a bunch after listening to this genius. Based on his history as a head coach & the mess USC is already in, I'd put the over/under on Kiffin's tenure as the Trojan head coach at 1 1/2 seasons. Remember when everybody, including me, was blaming Raider owner Al Davis for Kiffin's firing in Oakland? Al looks like the sharpest guy in football right now.
The Bengals signed Terrell Owens on Wednesday to join Marvin Lewis' semi-dysfunctional band in Cincinnati. They already signed free agents Matt Jones(suspended a year for cocaine use) & Antonio Bryant, both former 1st round draft picks. The Bengals drafted Texas wideout Jordan Shipley & Kansas Jayhawk Dezmon Briscoe in April plus tight end Jermaine Gresham in the first round. Already on the Cincy roster were Quan Cosby, Andre Caldwell, Jerome Simpson, tight end Chase Coffman & Mr Excitement himself, Chad Ochocinco. This is a high-maintenance group of receivers, big egos & troubled pasts. The whining & pouting on this sideline could be amazing. Head coach Marvin Lewis was reportedly not on board for the T.O. acquisition but quarterback Carson Palmer wanted him, so he's now a Bengal. Now Palmer can ride herd on this huddle, good luck. I wonder why they didn't look for more depth at running back instead of this pack of head cases. This is the year I wish the Bengals were on HBO's "Hard Knocks." It would have been fun to watch.
