CHASE MAKES HIS CASE, KERRY KO'D, DANARIO SIGNS & ANOTHER JAYHAWK OUT FOR THE YEAR

Chase Daniel got a real chance last night, he played 2 quarters, one with the starters & he made his case to be the Saints #2 option at quarterback. Eight-year veteran Patrick Ramsey had been signed to fill those shoes, but after Daniel's Saturday evening at the Louisiana Super Dome, there is some question. Chase threw three touchdowns, finishing the night 15 of 21 for 182 yards. He threw an interception & drew a delay of game penalty but his performance was impressive. New Orleans walloped Houston 38-20. Ramsey will get significant playing time against the Chargers on Friday to see if he can retain the #2 job with the Saints.

I was a big fan of former Kansas Jayhawk Kerry Meier, I thought he had a real shot in Atlanta. The quarterback turned wide receiver was having a great training camp according to Falcon coach Mike Smith & had caught 3 passes for 36 yards in limited playing time. Sadly, Meier's season is over, he blew out his knee Thursday night & it will require season-ending surgery. With Harry Douglas rehabbing a blown knee from last season & Michael Jenkins out with a shoulder injury, the Falcons wide receiver depth is really slim.

Detroit's 2nd year QB, Matthew Stafford, had quite a night against the Broncos. He led the first team in four consecutive scoring drives resulting in 16 points. Two of the field goals came after touchdown passes were dropped & he finished the evening 13 of 18 for 130 yards & a touchdown. Another news flash, Stafford wasn't sacked, don't really know if the Lion O-line was so good or Denver's defense came up short of a pass rush again.

Oakland news: Darius Heyward-Bey was "too fatigued" to play in Saturday's game with the Bears.

I'm happy to report the St. Louis Rams have signed former Mizzou wide receiver Danario Alexander. This kid has been thru a lot injury-wise & I have a helluva lot of respect for the way he has stuck to his dream & fought back from 4 knee operations. He led the nation in receiving yards last year but his knee acted up again Senior Bowl week, requiring additional surgery. He rehabbed & trained his way back into NFL shape & finally, he will get his shot.

Iowa running back Brandon Wegher has left the team for the second time in two weeks. He left for "personal reasons" on August 8th, returned on the 16th & then left again on the 19th. Coach Kirk Ferentz urged Wegher to stay in school & go to class regardless if he returns to the football program again.

New Coach Turner Gill has seen his Jayhawks decimated by injury since spring practice. Running back Rell Lewis blew his ACL on Friday & will be lost for the season. Lewis was one of only two running backs who have actually carried the ball in a college football game. He's already lost two offensive line starters as well as a D-lineman & a linebacker. For a team that only returned 12 starters, losing 5 of them before the season even begins sure makes Gill's debut in Lawrence that much tougher.
