CHIEFS CUT 4, INJURY UPDATES, SANCHEZ FEELING SOME HEAT, SATURDAY WRAP-UP & A GOOD DEAL ON COWBOY TICKETS
The Chiefs cut 4 players on Sunday, no surprises among them. Offensive lineman Tyler Eastman, tight end Cody Slate, running back Kestahn Moore & quarterback Bill Stull got their walking papers. Stull never took a snap in a game while the other three saw limited action.
The Chiefs & their fans got good news when rookie linebacker Cameron Sheffield showed up at Arrowhead yesterday after being released from the hospital. He lay motionless Friday night after a helmet-to-helmet hit. But he's walking fine & will return to practice as soon as he's cleared by team doctors. Jamaal Charles went down with what appeared to be a left elbow injury on Friday night, but it was just a stinger.
For other teams, the injury news isn't as good. Ravens wide receiver Donte Stallworth sustained a broken foot that will require surgery & he will be lost for at least six weeks. The team leader in sacks, linebacker Calvin Pace, will be lost to the New York Jets for at least 6 weeks. Pace also suffered a fractured foot that will require surgery. Oakland lost their leading receiver from last season, Michael Bush, broke his thumb last night against the Forty-Niners. No word on how long he'll be sidelined. The Eagles leading sacker, defensive end Trent Cole, is day to day with an ankle sprain sustained in Friday's game with Kansas City.
In yesterday's New York Times it was pointed out that quarterback Mark Sanchez is having a disappointing preseason. The paper pointed to boo birds at two of the Jets' home games, those boos directed at Sanchez. I watched all three of their preseason games & I think the paper's criticism is somewhat exaggerated. Sanchez hasn't been sparkling by any measure, but the article was ultra-critical. New York media ultra-critical? Who would've thunk it? They did point out one real concern for Jet fans, their schedule starts off with Baltimore, New England & Miami in the first three weeks, so there will be no easing into the season. Sanchez had better be ready.
After last night's game with the Seahawks, Minnesota wide receiver Percy Harvin told reporters the team doctors believe they have a handle on what is causing his severe migraine headaches. The problem stems from a nutrition & medication allergy or so they think. Having Harvin healthy & practicing daily would be a big boost for the Vikings, especially since leading receiver Sidney Rice will by out for the first 8 weeks of the season after hip surgery.
In Saturday's preseason action it was interesting to watch the new receivers acquired by the Minnesota Vikings. Greg Camarillo came to the Vikings in a trade with Miami last week & Brett Favre wasted no time in getting him involved. He snagged 4 of Favre's throws for 47 yards. The other new wideout, Javon Walker, caught 2 passes for 32 yards in garbage time. In Minnesota's 24-13 win, running back Adrian Peterson, had 11 carries for only 37 yards & one score. That touchdown run was from 24-yards out, meaning his remaining 10 carries only resulted in 13-yards, no where near what the Vikings need. Seattle's Earl Thomas, their #1 draft pick in April, played a great game at safety. He had 2 tackles for loss, knocked down 2 passes & took an interception back 87-yards for a score.
Jay Cutler threw two picks last night in Chicago's 14-9 loss to Arizona. The Cardinal QB battle intensified with both Derek Anderson & Matt Leinart having good performances. Leinart was 9 of 10 for 84 yards & a score.
Lions' starting QB Matthew Stafford had a good evening versus the Browns. Stafford went 13 of 17 for 141 yards & a touchdown in Detroit's 35-27 win. Rookie running back Jahvid Best had only one carry in the game but he made it count, busting a 51-yard run. The Brown's starter, Jake Delhomme, also played well, 20 of 24 for 152 yards & one score.
Cincinnati's Carson Palmer is lovin' his receiving corps. Palmer went 9 of 11 for 95 yards & 2 scores. Ochocinco & TE Jermaine Gresham both caught touchdown passes from Palmer. Rookie Jordan Shipley, playing the slot receiver, had another good game with 5 catches & it looks like this job is his. They released free agent wideout Antonio Bryant & I could see their other free agent signee, Matt Jones, hitting the road as well. Buffalo won the game 35-20 behind a fine performance by QB Trent Edwards & rookie runner C.J. Spiller, who scored twice.
Baltimore beat the Giants 24-10 behind quarterback Joe Flacco who completed 21 of 34 for 221 yards & threw touchdown passes to Anquan Boldin & Todd Heap. Flacco spread it around last night, Boldin caught 4, Heap had 6 receptions, backup TE Ed Dickson 4, Ray Rice 4 & Derrick Mason 5.
Carolina recorded 7 sacks & 8 more quarterback hits in their 15-7 win over Tennessee. Tampa's rookie wide receiver Mike Williams continues to make his case for a starting job. He has apparently put all the bad behavior from Syracuse in the rear view mirror, he has really excelled since arriving in Tampa. Oakland's first round draft pick, inside linebacker Rolando McClain, made 8 tackles last night against cross-bay rivals, the Forty-Niners. Michael Crabtree was a late scratch for Frisco much to my disappointment, I wanted to see him against Nmandi Asomugha, one of the league's best corners. The Raiders are getting a lot of hype to the point of even being called a "playoff darkhorse." I don't see it & last night's game reinforced my beliefs. I know Richard Seymour didn't start for the Raiders last night, but he's never been much of a pass rush threat. But Frisco started two rookies on their offensive line & QB Alex Smith was hardly touched & wasn't sacked. Add to that Michael Bush's thumb injury & DHB's "fatigue" issues, I just don't see the Raiders contending for a wildcard spot. They'll improve on last season tho.
That leaves only the battle of Texas, Dallas at Houston. In a lopsided game that was much worse than the score would indicate, the Texans topped the 'Boys 23-7. Once again the first team offense fizzled big time. QB Tony Romo & the rest of the 1st team offense played 3 full quarters & once again, they couldn't score. They managed only 13 yards rushing for the entire game, they turned the ball over & did a poor job in pass protection. Their run defense took the night off, surrendering 173 yards to Houston with Arian Foster romping for 110 yards in just 18 carries. Oh yeah, Bernard Pollard led the Texans in tackles last night. At one point in the telecast, CBS's Gus Johnson mentioned Pollard was formerly a Kansas City Chief & Phil Simms said "how did a team like Kansas City let him go?" Excellent point Phil.
Since the over-hyped Cowboys have performed so poorly in the preseason, you might not want to jump on this ticket deal. A federal bankruptcy judge in Dallas has placed 6 season tickets on the 47-yardline downstairs up for auction. The opening price includes the PSL(personal seat license), but does not include the ticket transfer fee you'd have to pay the Cowboys, no big deal, that's just $70,000!!! Man that's some expensive paperwork huh? The bidding opens at $185,421, honestly, that's the opening price set by the court for the six seats & eight games. If you're interested in bidding on this unique opportunity, keep it to yourself O.K.? The rest of us are just trying to find a way to pay for our NFL Sunday Ticket tab with DirecTV.
