DERRICK WASHINGTON "PERMANENTLY SUSPENDED", MARVIN AUSTIN SUSPENDED BY UNC & IS MATT LEINART HEADED TO THE GIANTS?

Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel announced this afternoon starting running back & team co-captain, Derrick Washington, has been "permanently suspended." In other words, he will never again play for the Tigers. Losing their 2-time leading rusher is a major blow to Mizzou's hopes this season. But being charged with a felony, deviate sexual assault, is a very serious matter. This incident is the worst of a rash of recent transgressions by members of the Missouri Tiger football program. Defensive star Will Ebner was charged with DUI two weeks ago & he is currently under suspension. Junior tight end/long snapper, Beau Brinkley was arrested for a DUI early Sunday morning, assistant coach Bruce Walker was also charged with a DUI earlier this summer & now with the charges against Washington, Coach Pinkel is "embarrassed & disappointed for the entire program."

The University of North Carolina has suspended All-American defensive tackle Marvin Austin "indefinitely" just three days before the Tar Heels opener vs. LSU. Coach Butch Davis said the suspension wasn't related to the recent NCAA investigation into Austin's presence at a lavish party in Miami that may or may not have been paid for by pro agents, a serious NCAA infraction. Worse, this young man used his Twitter account to relay information about the party & invited players from other teams to join him in Miami. Twitter, Facebook & the rest are going to be the best evidence against the rule breakers, they just don't get it, put it on a social network site & it's there permanently. Davis said the suspension was related to Austin's "disregard of team policies & neglecting his responsibility to the team."

Iowa backup center Josh Koeppel won't play in Saturday's opener with Eastern Illinois, he's lucky to be alive. While riding his motorcycle this morning, he was struck by an SUV making a left-hand turn in an Iowa City intersection. I saw the incident in a YouTube video taken by a police department cruiser's dash cam, sitting at the intersection. It was frightening, the 282-pound player was flipped into the air, landing in the street. Word from Iowa officials is he is in good condition.

Word around the Arizona Cardinal's locker room this afternoon is backup quarterback Matt Leinart is  going to be traded to the New York Giants. Leinart made it clear last night in a phone conversation with FOXSports' Jay Glazer, he would not settle for being the backup in Arizona. Personally I don't see a coach like Tom Coughlin bringing in a player with the issues Leinart has been tagged with. He's a no-nonsense type of coach, pretty much old school & Leinart is somewhat of a high maintenance player. I don't believe Leinart will be with the Cardinals come Saturday afternoon, but I don't know about the Giants. New York put their primary backup, Jim Sorgi, on injured reserve yesterday after he suffered an injured throwing shoulder in their preseason opener with the Jets. The Giants have 2nd-year man, Rhett Bomar, as the only backup to Eli Manning currently.

I'll have another post later tonight, lots of breaking news around college & professional football today.
