RYAN BEMOANS "LACK OF LEADERSHIP ON OFFENSE", ED REED TO THE PUP, SAGE TO NYG, MASOLI WINS APPEAL & CHIEFS GET A WAIVER
For those of you who don't get the HBO series "Hard Knocks, Training camp with the New York Jets" it gets more strange every week. On this week's episode head coach Rex Ryan is in a meeting with his coaches whining about the lack of leadership on offense. As Chris Cannizzaro of The New York Post accurately points out, "if Ryan is looking for leadership on offense, he should look in Kansas City or Arizona." When the Jets decided to part company with Thomas Jones & Alan Fanneca, they effectively lost their clubhouse leaders. Santonio Holmes claims he wants the mantle of leader, but he's just about ready to go on a 4-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, so his leadership may have to wait a while. Ryan complains about QB Mark Sanchez's immaturity, which I agree with, but when you let the long time offensive leaders go else where, stop whining.
All-Pro safety Ed Reed has been placed on the PUP list, making him ineligible to practice or play for the first six weeks of the regular season. This is a real blow to Baltimore's Super Bowl hopes.
The Vikings have traded quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the New York Giants for a conditional draft pick in 2011 & 2012. Jim Sorgi was #2 on the depth chart until he was injured in a preseason game with the Jets & placed on injured reserve. Rhett Bomar got nearly 10 quarters of action after Sorgi went down & Eli Manning suffered a laceration to his forehead. Bomar might end up being something, but he simply needs more work & New York wanted someone with more experience.
Jeremiah Masoli won his appeal with the NCAA & is immediately eligible to play for Ole Miss. The former Oregon quarterback who led the Ducks to the 2010 Rose Bowl got himself in a lot of trouble in the off-season & was dismissed from the football program. Since he had already graduated from Oregon, he enrolled in graduate school at Ole Miss, planning to use his last year of college eligibility. The NCAA rejected his request for waiver, saying he would have to sit out one year before returning to football. His appeal was ruled on Friday & he won. No word yet about his chances of playing Saturday against Jacksonville State.
The Chiefs applied for a waiver for Jarrad Page since he signed his tender offer barely more than 24-hours before Kansas City has to reduce their roster to 53 players. They were granted a 2-game waiver before he starts counting against that 53-man roster. I think the Chiefs will trade Page, I don't see him spending anytime at practice. Seven players were cut this evening, 6 warm bodies & G/T Ike Ndukwe, who started 3 games last season. Fifteen more Chiefs will have to be released or placed on injured reserve before 5PM tomorrow. Check back here, I'll have all the important details of cutdown day around the league.
I received a number of questions regarding some of the talent that will most likely be on the street by tomorrow or is already out there. As far as T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Laveranues Coles & Antonio Bryant, I'd say the Chiefs have zero interest in any of them, I know I don't want to see them in a Kansas City uniform. A couple of questions came in asking about Patrick Ramsey & Matt Leinart. I see no way either comes to Kansas City. Neither one is a major upgrade at the quarterback position. They've both had their chances with a better supporting cast than Kansas City has right now. Ramsey knows he's no longer starter material, he's playing for a paycheck. Leinart still thinks he's a starter & his attitude, dedication & leadership have been questioned for some time now, something the Chiefs don't need. If either was a great talent, they might be willing to take a chance & try to rehab, retrain & re-energize one of them, but that's not the case. I would prefer to see the Chiefs select a quarterback in next April's draft, someone without baggage, a prospect with real potential, someone Charlie Weis & Todd Haley can groom to be "the man." I really question Matt Cassel's long term viability with the Chiefs, but grabbing someone who's damaged goods off the scrap heap is no way to build a franchise.
