CHIEFS PLACE SHEFFIELD ON I.R., MISSING JAX WILL COST CHARGERS & IS RAY LEWIS III BETTER THAN HIS OLD MAN?

The Chiefs put one of their 5th round draft picks, linebacker Cameron Sheffield, on injured reserve, ending his season. Sheffield was injured in a preseason game with Philadelphia but had been cleared to return to practice. During a Sunday practice after the final preseason game, an ambulance was dispatched to the practice facility to take a player to the hospital. That player was never identified by the team, but Sheffield was absent from practice the following day. He was inactive for Monday's game with the Chargers. The neck injury he sustained wasn't considered to be serious but ambulance rides to the hospital 10 days after the initial injury could point to something more serious or a complication. The team signed linebacker Charlie Anderson, a free agent, to fill Sheffield's roster spot. Anderson had been with the Texans for 4 seasons & the Dolphins in 2008-09. A career backup from Ole Miss, Anderson recorded 2.5 sacks last year for Miami. In other Chiefs' news, today after President Denny Thum resigned, his administrative assistant was no longer employed by the team either. Nadine Steffen, a Chifes' employee of over 15 years was out as well. Thum's name had been removed from the website almost immediately after the team issued the statement about Thum's resignation. This deal is very bizarre.

The Denver Broncos cut wide receiver Brandon Stokely after reaching an injury settlement with the 12-year veteran. Stokely, a 2-time Super Bowl ring winner with the 2000 Ravens & 2006 Colts, is now free to sign with any team who'll have him.

More trouble with Tweets, the NFL is looking into the secured personal Twitter account of Arizona Cardinal defensive tackle Darnell Dockett. He allegedly posted a Tweet on his account 20 minutes before the Cards kicked off in St Louis. The league forbids any social network posting 90-minutes before or after a game. What is it about these social networks that keep causing these problems?

The Chiefs' win over the San Diego Chargers on Monday pointed to a glaring weakness the absence of wide receiver Vincent Jackson has created. Once the Chiefs took away Phillip Rivers' favorite receiver, tight end Antonio Gates, the Chargers were really hamstrung in the passing game. Jackson continues to hold out in a contract dispute & if he ever returns, he'll be facing a 3-game suspension for twin DUI's he received in the off-season. This pair were 1 & 1A in the Charger passing game, 147 receptions good for 2,324 yards & 17 touchdowns last year. Both are big, physical receivers & because Jackson isn't available, teams will copy what the Chiefs did in the 2nd half Monday night & bracket Gates with 2 or 3 defenders. He didn't catch a pass after  Romeo Crennell went to this coverage. Gates wore out rookie Eric Berry in the first half when he was covering the All-Pro man for man. Berry kept giving Gates the inside & Rivers has a quick enough release to hit that route all day long. Crennell took the route away with double & even triple coverage in the 2nd half. It worked, I'll be interested to see how the Jags cover Gates this Sunday.

The Florida Gators will be without starting wide receiver Chris Rainey as he has been indefinitely suspended by coach Urban Meyer. Rainey was arrested & charged with aggravated stalking for posting a social network entry Sunday night that police considered a threat. After his girlfriend had broken up with Rainey, he repeatedly called her to no avail. Rainey posted "She doesn't want me anymore? It's now dying time." on both Facebook & Twitter. It sounds like Chris needs some professional help, let's hope he gets it.

If you watched the Ravens-Jets game Monday night, you saw one of the best linebackers to ever play in the National Football League, Baltimore's Ray Lewis. The 35-year old played as well as he's played at anytime during his 15-year career. But is he even the best football player in his own family? Ray Lewis III, his 15-year old son, a sophomore at Lake Mary Prep High School in Orlando Florida, began his high school career this past Friday & to say he made an impact is the understatement of the year. Lewis totaled an unbelievable 504 yards in their opening game. The Orlando Sentinel reported the 5' 9" 186 pounder was a one-man wrecking crew. Lewis totaled 206 yards returning punts(with 2 TD's), 101 yards returning kickoffs, 104 yards rushing, 27 receiving & 66 passing on a 6 for 6 performance. Wait, there's more, Lewis III also recorded six solo tackles & batted down a pass. Apparently being named Ray Lewis III isn't that much of a burden, wow.
