LETS THE BLACKOUTS BEGIN, SHARPE TO RETURN SUNDAY & MY OFFICE POOL PICKS
I told you earlier today it looked like the Chargers were going to be the first TV blackout of the year. Turns out they're not alone, also kicking off at 1:15 Pacific time will be the Rams-Raiders contest, now officially a blackout as well. The Detroit Lions were granted a 24-hour extension as they are within a few hundred tickets of the required number of sales so that MoTown locals can see their team on Sunday. This is going to be a constant problem for the NFL this season.
Shannon Sharpe, who stepped aside from his NFL Today broadcast duties on CBS, has been cleared to return. The woman who requested a restraining order against Sharpe, failed to show in court on Wednesday. Since she never filed a police report or even called the police, regarding Sharpe's behavior towards her, he's free to return to his TV gig. Her motion for a restraining order was of the ex parte type of filing, in other words, Sharpe had no say in the matter. Since she didn't go to the hearing on Wednesday, the whole case was dismissed. No idea what really happened, he could have paid her off, she could have made the whole thing up, I'm guessing the truth lies somewhere in the middle like most "he said, she said" type cases. Regardless, this is Sharpe's 10th legal entanglement with a former girlfriend or baby mama, so he has a pretty poor record in this area.
Tampa's Aqib Talib & Seattle's Leroy Hill are birds of a feather to be sure. The pair was to serve one-game suspensions last week. Talib's trouble stemmed from punching a cab driver in the face while he was extremely intoxicated. Hill was on a suspension for marijuana possession when he smacked his girlfriend at their home one evening. Both were required to stay away from their respective teams for exactly one week & they could have returned to practice this past Monday & play this Sunday. Whoa! Not so fast my friend! Both violated the "stay away" portion of their suspensions as both attended their team's home game last Sunday. This part of the suspension process is clearly spelled out in league rules & is actually on the last page of the suspension paperwork that requires the players signature. Both players could face fines, additional suspensions & their team could be fined as well. Oh, those pesky details.
Last week I went 11-5 in the first week of my "Office Pool Picks." Good luck to those following my hunches.
