CHIEFS SHOW STUDEBAKER THE MONEY, GILBERRY RETURNS & ONE MORE SATURDAY PLAY

The Chiefs, in a surprising move, gave outside linebacker Andy Studebaker a contract extension. The details of the deal weren't announced, but Studebaker did say "Hopefully now, I'll retire here." So how long was the extension? He's shown flashes of ability playing strongside outside linebacker & has excelled on special teams. His block on Charger punter Mike Scifres Monday night was the last obstacle on Dexter McCluster's 94-yard return. Speaking of that return, I said the other day, when I noticed McCluster was set to return that punt after Javier Arenas had returned the previous two for 60-yards, "why is McCluster back there?" Peter King of Sports illustrated revealed today in an interview with Todd Haley, it was the Chiefs' head coach that pulled the trigger on that decision. He said because Charlie Weis speaks to Matt Cassel on the sideline instead of him, he has more free time to observe his team. He looked over at Arneas & "he was bent over at the waist huffing & puffing, so I said put McCluster in there." When special teams coach Steve Hoffman said "Why? Javier is doing great." Haley shot back "he's tired, he's played every nickel snap in the game, use Dexter." Nice intuition coach. On the injury front, Wallace Gilberry returned to practice leaving only Tyson Jackson & Ryan O'Callaghan doubtful for Sunday's game in Cleveland. Alex McGee is expected to start in Jackson's spot at LDE.

Marvin Austin may have finally grasped the severity of his actions when he was being sworn in to testify before the North Carolina Secretary of State. He is accused of having illegal contact with a sports agent or marketer during a trip to Miami. The contact & some resulting academic misconduct caused 13 Tar Heel players to be held out of the season opener vs. LSU. Only one player has been cleared to return to the team. The State is very serious about this illegal contact, maybe Austin will realize what a jackpot he's gotten his team into with his selfishness.

In other injury news around the NFL, Denver wide receiver & #1 draft pick, Demaryius Thomas, will be activated for Sunday's game with Seattle. Thomas had re-injured his foot during training camp & had missed the entire preseason slate of games & the opener in Jacksonville last Sunday. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, he of holdout fame, has a shaky hamstring according to the New York Times. Revis heldout for 35 days & his conditioning is certainly in question. He's slated to cover Randy Moss on every snap this Sunday. Sergio Kindle, who suffered a skull fracture falling down two flights of stairs just before he was to report to training camp, probably won't play for the Ravens this season. Coach John Harbaugh said today they wanted to sign Kindle to a contract, but it wouldn't be like the normal rookie deal since it hasn't even been determined if he can ever play football again. "With everything that's happened to Sergio, we have to protect both the team & his interests, so there will be some delicate negotiations" Harbaugh said.

One year ago tomorrow, the #1 team in the nation, USC, went to Washington & was upset by the Huskies. Washington is an entirely different team at home, so on that strength, I will make one more play tomorrow:

Nebraska  at  Washington +5
2:30 PM   ABC

The Huskers start a freshman QB & this place can be a nightmare for even the most experienced quarterback. The building actually shakes when the Husky fans get into it. Two injured linebackers on Nebraska concerned me as well. If Washington holds a late lead, a freshman throwing the ball in this building will be very difficult.

I also like Texas Tech tomorrow evening, if Cal & Washington cover, I imagine a wager on the Red Raiders will be forthcoming before 7 PM.
