ADJUSTMENTS IN SATURDAY PLAYS, CHIEFS SAVE HUGE $$$ & REGGIE "LOOKS LIKE AN IDIOT AGAIN"

I told you yesterday I was going to play Washington +5 today against Nebraska. When I made my call this morning I found that everyone likes Washington & they're down to +3. I've told you all along, when the public moves a game that much virtually overnight, they're almost always wrong. So Washington no longer was on my play list.  So, in addition to last night's very disappointing Cal Bears(murdered by WAC Nevada), I have Texas Tech +3 1/2 vs Texas in Lubbock & Iowa getting 1 1/2 from Arizona. The Hawkeyes had been favored by 2, but the bettors moved the line Arizona's way 1 1/2. I liked Iowa -2, I absolutely love the Hawkeyes +1 1/2 now.

Last season the NFL salary floor, minimum dollar figure a team could spend on player salaries, was $110 million. Since this is an uncapped year, the cap & floor are not in play this season. The Chiefs spent the 2nd smallest dollar figure league-wide this year with a total of $84.5 million committed to player compensation. This makes the Chiefs way more profitable than many of their competitors around the league. The big question is, does spending more money translate into wins? If you look at the example Daniel Snyder has set with the Redskins, the answer is no. With nearly 100 free agents that would have been unrestricted F/A's reduced to restricted free agents, bidding wars didn't really break out like in a normal year. The Chiefs didn't have much high dollar talent to resign or protect from free agency, so they didn't have to spend a lot of money. But this is a figure Chiefs' fans should keep an eye on down the road.

Last night Kansas lost in Hattiesburg Mississippi to Southern Miss, 31-16. The 'Hawks were never really in the game, the back-breaker came in the form of a blocked punt returned for a touchdown with 1:35 left in the half to push Southern Mississippi's lead to 21-3. Out in Reno, the Cal Bears were worn out by Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick who threw for 183 yards & 2 scores while running for 149 yards & 3 touchdowns. Cal's Shane Vereen looked every bit as dangerous with the ball in his hands as the guy he replaced, Lions #1 draft pick, Jahvid Best. His ultra-quick feet were amazing & his acceleration makes this junior one of my top-5 runners in the nation right now. Bear wideout Marvin Jones, a junior like Vereen, caught 12 passes for 161 yards & looked very NFL-like doing it. Cal QB Kevin Riley, a 4-year starter, absolutely stunk up the place.

The New York Jets continue to endear themselves to their NFL brethren. Because of their perceived insensitivity toward TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz, every player & coach in the league will now have to sit thru a few hours of training aimed at preventing such behavior elsewhere, per the league office. The league issued a statement saying "the Jets acted unprofessionally toward a reporter & it is our wish this type of behavior isn't repeated." The Jets had already annoyed many other teams & their players with their boastful ways on HBO's Hard Knocks. When they fell flat on opening night, it was to pretty much a league-wide approval, teams are growing sick of the Jets. Now they have another reason to hate "Team Green."

Current University of Washington head coach, Steve Sarkisian, the former USC offensive coordinator, said yesterday "Reggie had a chance to apologize, look like a good guy. But in giving it back(the Heisman Trophy) & not apologizing, he looks like an idiot again." This comment was in response to Reggie's comment "giving it back is not an admission of guilt." Sound like a lawyer wrote that? Reggie should just shut up & play, his explanations, rationalizations & excuses fall woefully short of hitting the mark, he does "look like an idiot."

I got this remark in an email this morning, honest, this is word-for-word.

"outside of a terrible fumble, some bad punt coverage & a good block by Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs did nothing, the Chargers should have won the game."

Really? It was all of the above that cost San Diego the game, that's the way it is in professional football, one or two plays decide the outcome of many games. Not every game has a decided winner in the momentum, stats & scoreboard. One or two plays decide close games & very often those plays come on special teams. Before the game I said the Chiefs three speed guys, Charles, Arenas & McCluster, might take over the game. They did & the Chargers did nothing to stop it, so no, the Chargers should not have won the game. End of story, find something else to whine about.
