SATURDAY'S WINNERS & LOSERS, MOE'S MIZZOU MIRACLE & MORE FROM COLLEGE SATURDAY
SATURDAY'S WINNERS & LOSERS
The Winners:
1. Nebraska
The Cornhuskers went on the road & absolutely smoked the Washington Huskies 56-21, it wasn't as close as the score might indicate. Nebraska looked like....well they looked like a Nebraska powerhouse of old. They ran the ball for 383 yards, 3 different backs topped the century mark. They looked fast, they looked strong, they did just about whatever they wanted on offense. I understand Washington isn't Oregon, but they were so outclassed in this game & they were playing on their home field. The Huskers could very well be a top-10 team all season, I wasn't ready to give them that ranking before now, but they deserve it.
2. Ryan Mallett & Arkansas
The Hogs traveled to Athens Georgia to play the Dawgs in search of their first SEC road win under coach Bobby Petrino. They got it thanks to the superior quarterback play of Ryan Mallett. The Michigan transfer was spectacular completing 21 of 33 for 380 yards & 3 touchdowns. The Razorbacks didn't commit a turnover. Mallett threw the winning score to WR Greg Childs with :15 seconds on the clock. Arkansas passed a very big test on Saturday, their reward? Play defending national champions Alabama, currently ranked #1, next Saturday.

3. Mark Ingram
The defending Heisman Trophy winner returned from a two-game hiatus after arthroscopic knee surgery. He played just the first quarter at Duke, only carried 9 times, but he totaled 151 yards & scored twice. It will be tough to repeat as the 2010 Heisman winner after missing two games, but you never know. I know Nick Saban was happy to see "Lil Emmitt" back on Sauturday.
4. Mark Dantonio
The Michigan State coach showed the biggest balls on Saturday when he called for a fake field goal in their overtime game with Notre Dame. It worked. Trailing 31-28 in the 1st O.T. the Spartans lined up for the field goal attempt that would hopefully tie the game. Holder Charlie Gantt took the snap, stood up & fired a pass to a wide open Aaron Bates, who scored the winning touchdown. I would like to mention the play clock had expired before the snap but no one caught it. As the coaches met at midfield after it was over, Irish coach Brian Kelly said "nice call" that it was.
5. Virginia Tech
They were a winner because they literally were a winner......finally. After trailing for much of the 1st half, the Hokies steamrolled East Carolina in the second half to get their 1st win of this very disappointing season..
6. My bookie
Let's see I had Cal last night, Texas Tech tonight & Iowa late tonight....how'd I do?
The Losers:
1. Ole Miss
After losing in week one to Division 1AA Jacksonville State, the Rebels rebounded last week against Tulane. But it was back to square one for the 'Right Reverend' Houston Nutt. His Rebs were beaten by 0-2 Vanderbilt 28-14 at Oxford. Very, very bad.
2. Clemson
Clemson jumped out to a 17-0 lead only to be forced into overtime at 24-all. After Auburn kicked a go-ahead field goal, Clemson attempted to do the same, "it's up, it's good." "But wait a minute, there's a flag." The center had picked the ball off the turf before he snapped it, illegal procedure, do it over. I looked at Linda & said "no way he makes this field goal again." "It's up & it's wiiiiiide left, Auburn wins."
3. Texas Tech
So much for the Tommy Tuberville mystique in Lubbock. His Red Raiders played like the Oakland Raiders, turnovers, really stupid penalties & sacks aplenty. Tech stopped the Horns with about 11-minutes left in the game at the Red Raider 29-yardline. But after breaking up a 3rd down pass, a Tech DB decided taunting his prone opponent would be a good idea. Fifteen yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, 1st down, 6 plays later, Texas scores the touchdown that puts the game out of reach. Does that sound like a Raider team or what? Tech totaled minus-14 yards on the ground & coupled with their 158 yards thru the air, well it just wasn't very good. Somewhere Mike Leach was smiling tonight.
4. Jake Locker
Not even Mel Kiper Jr. can sing his praises anymore. He was worse than awful on Saturday, completing 4 of 20 for 71 yards & 2 interceptions. As I watched the game I actually thought is was worse than that, if that's possible. For a guy who was touted to be one of the leading Heisman Trophy candidates, he has been dreadful in 2 of 3 games this season. He checks down way too quickly(ala Mark Sanchez), his release point is all over the place causing the ball to sail on him. In my eyes, he'll need a lot of work to even be considered as a first round draft pick, much less a top-5 selection.
5. Arizona State
It's games like this one that get coaches fired. Alums & administration who traveled to Camp Randle to watch the Sun Devils play Wisconsin, won't soon forget what transpired. Dennis Erickson's special teams played inspired football until their last snap. After scoring a late 4th quarter touchdown to get within 20-19, all the Devils needed was an extra point to possibly send this game to overtime. The point gets blocked after the outside blocker let a man get inside of him while he took the outside man. This is something PAT personnel learn on their 1st friggin' day of practice, never ever let the inside guy get past you. let the outside guy go around you, but never let the inside guy get past you.Arizona State also dropped a touchdown pass, had a punt return touchdown called back on a block in the back & a 98-yard kickoff return with no time left on the 1st half clock. The returner was knocked out of bounds at the one-yardline.
6. Case Keenum
The Houston quarterback was slammed to the turf at the 2-yardline after a 45-yard scramble. He looked slightly dazed but stayed in the game. He shouldn't have, he threw a pick on the next play & after chasing Akeem Ayers some 50-yards downfield, Keenum collapsed & was carted off the field never to return. He sustained a concussion last Friday night, I don't expect to see Keenum playing for the Cougars for a while.
7. Burger King
If I'm forced to flip channels or mute the sound to avoid the asinine march-a-thon that is "breakfast at BK" any more, I'm liable to go on a shooting spree. That crap aired at least 30 times on my 5 screens today. Enough is enough, I'm beggin' you.
Tonight's San Diego State-Mizzou game wasn't on free TV, it was however available for the 2nd straight week on pay-per-view at the low, low price of only $39.95. So needless to say, we didn't see the telecast, choosing to hear it the way God intended, on the radio. The torture this broadcast provided fit in well as we were watching the Texas-Texas Tech turnover fiesta at the time. Blaine Gabbert played his worst game as a Tiger starter, he threw a couple of 4th quarter picks, made an errant pitch that was miraculously recovered by the Tigers, he just wasn't himself. But with 1:22 left in the game, down 24-20, Gabbert connected with his favorite receiver, T.J. Moe, on a 12-yard out pattern. Moe turned upfield, shook a tackler, got a sensational block from fellow wideout Jerrell Jackson that wiped out two Aztec defenders & he was off to the races, 69-yards down the far sideline for the winning touchdown. It was Moe's 30th reception in three games this season which leads the nation. Lucky, lucky, lucky.
Texas A&M did like Mizzou, escaping from a 3-quarter trap set by Florida International, scoring three 4th quarter touchdowns to win 27-20. Aggie QB Jerrod Johnson was worse than Blaine Gabbert, completing just 11 of 31 for 194 yards & 4 interceptions.
Gabbert & Johnson weren't alone, several of the big name Big-12 QB's had less than sparkling efforts this weekend. Texas' Garrett Gilbert threw 3 interceptions, Tech's Taylor Potts threw 2 picks, lost a fumble & was sacked about 19 times or so it seemed.
The Okie State QB's had the best outing of the day, probably in the entire country. Starter Brandon Weeden & his backup Clint Chelf went off to the tune of 31 completions for 543 yards & eight touchdowns.
The Air Force Academy pushed Oklahoma around in Norman on Saturday. They totaled 458 yards & got within three in the 4th quarter, losing 27-24.
Kansas State's Daniel Thomas continues to excel, 34 carries for 181 yards & 2 touchdowns in their win in the "Farmagedden" game with Iowa State at Arrowhead.
