SAINTS SQUEEZE OUT A WIN IN FRISCO
The Chiefs game with the Forty-Niners just got a little bit tougher. Frisco is now 0-2 after being the front runner to win the NFC West. The Saints escaped with a perfect 2-0 record, even tho they didn't play very well. The Niners lost 2 fumbles, one at the Saints' 8-yardline with 1 minute left in the 1st half & the other at their own 18-yardline that resulted in a field goal. Tipped passes resulted in 2 interceptions, both deep in Saints territory. The total yardage was in Frisco's favor 417-287. The Saints were held to 50 yards rushing.
After a New Orleans field goal gave them an 8-point lead with 2:12 left in the game. Alex Smith led a 71-yard drive in just :53 seconds to make the score 22-20. The Niners went for a 2-point conversion to tie the game. Smith completed a throw to tight end Vernon Davis but he appeared stopped short of the goal line. Replay showed otherwise & the game was tied with 1:-8 left. Drew Brees directed his team downfield for the winning field goal, the big play was a 30-yard completion to Marcus Colston. For added drama, the Niners got a hand on the field goal attempt, but it still knuckled thru for the winning points.
I didn't want to see a desperate Niner team coming to Arrowhead this Sunday in search of their 1st win. But that's what we're going to get. New Orleans running back & return man, Reggie Bush, was helped off the field with what appeared to be a lower leg injury in the 4th quarter. Eric Berry is going to have his hands full with Niner tight end Vernon Davis. Frank Gore ran for 112 yards on 20 carries tonight & Alex Smith's performance was the best I'd ever seen him since he came into the league.
Jacksonville jags backup quarterback Luke McKown will be placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL yesterday in San Diego. He played in relief of starter David Garard in the second half. Now the Jags will have to find a serviceable quarterback ASAP as they have only Brent Ratliffe in a backup capacity.
