BRAYLON BLOWS .16, REGGIE OUT 4-6 WEEKS WITH BROKEN LEG & SHAUN SMITH GETS "GRABBY"
After catching a touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter of their win over New England, Jets' wide receiver Braylon Edwards cemented his reputation as a "Me First" kind of guy when he taunted the Patriots drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Undeterred, Edwards again taunted in the 4th quarter after catching a first down throw. He got lucky, the side judge reached for his flag, but didn't throw it. This behavior is a microcosm of this ultimately selfish athlete. It's all about him. In his contract year, it would make sense to keep a low profile, play your ass off, be a model citizen, thereby making it impossible for the Jets to choose the suspended Santonio Holmes over you after the season. The Jets won't keep both & after the events of the past 48 hours, I'd say Edwards has almost zero chance of being a new York Jet next season. After his taunting performance on Sunday, Edwards was arrested & charged with DUI this morning in Manhattan. He blew .16 on the breathalyzer, double the legal limit. The unbelievable arrogance of this should be more than enough for the Jets to part company with Edwards very quickly after the season ends. Several of his teammates were livid about this latest episode in selfishness. There is zero accountability with Edwards, he has this entitlement mentality that excuses everything. He's a very intelligent individual, just not accountable. Edwards was partying with Donte Stallworth the evening Stallworth struck & killed a pedestrian. Police reported teammates Vernon Gholston & D'Brickashaw Ferguson were in the car with Edwards, what the hell were they thinking? He's currently on probation in Ohio after pleading no contest to assaulting a club owner in Cleveland in front of multiple witnesses. The judge in that case made it clear to Edwards he thought his behavior was "beyond arrogant & the fact that you're standing before me makes me question my decision to free you on probation." The Jets face an important game Sunday night in Miami against the 2-0 Dolphins, dealing with yet another distraction, doesn't help their focus.
The New England Patriots have lost longtime 3rd down back, Kevin Faulk, for the remainder of the season. Faulk sustained a torn ACL in Sunday's game with the Jets. The 12-year veteran has 422 career receptions & more receiving yardage than rushing. This is a severe blow to the Patriots & Tom Brady's comfort level.
Reggie Bush was helped off the field last night after bobbling a punt return. He tried to walk but winced in pain & was taken to the locker room. The Saints reported this morning Bush suffered a broken fibula(the weight-bearing bone) in his right leg. He will miss 6 weeks minimum. This is a major blow to the defending NFL Champs. Bush was the punt returner, the 3rd down back & more. The Saints don't have anyone currently on the roster that can fill Bush's shoes. Though they're 2-0, the Saints offense hasn't been the explosive force they were in 2009 & losing Bush certainly lessens their homerun capability.
This Dallas-Houston game Sunday is huge for Dallas, win & they could turn things around, lose & they could very well be dead just 3 games into the season. Players are questioning the practice regimen, players are questioning the play calling, players are questioning each other, Wade Phillips is actually standing up to the media & the ringmaster, owner Jerry Jones, says "no problem." He's wrong, the Cowboys are under extreme duress with the fans & the media, both local & nationally. Everyone has an opinion as to what's wrong, so here is mine. It starts at the top, Jerry Jones sets the wrong tone wandering the bench in the 4th quarter. As he walked up & down the bench clapping his hands while his team was 10-points down Sunday was embarrassing. He has no business being down there, especially playing unabashed cheerleader when his team is clearly beaten. The Cowboys might have the most talented roster from man 1 to 53 in the league. Wade Phillips is clearly not the type of coach for this roster, he's too soft-spoken, too nice. I've dealt with Phillips in the past & a nicer man you couldn't meet, but he's very quiet, not the type to buck up to an egotistical owner like Jones, which is what is needed. The problem is finding a strong-willed coach to take the position knowing he can be fired anytime Jones feels his coach is usurping his power. Jones has no business being the team's general manager, this is a major part of their problem. Jones' ego will continue to be at the center of this team's underachieving, end of story.
Sunday, when the San Francisco Forty-Niners come to Arrowhead, there will be a lot of familiar faces to Kansas City fans. Frisco brings a coaching staff that includes Mike Solari(O-Line coach), Kurt Schottenheimer(special teams coach), Jimmy Raye(offensive coordinator) & Greg Manusky(defensive coordinator). Manusky's defense is really good & the Chiefs will have a very, very difficult time running the ball against this well-coached group. The Niners run the ball very well with Frank Gore & Anthony Dixon plus QB Alex Smith played the best game of his career last night. Was that performance a mirage or has he finally come of age as an NFL QB? Smith is as fast as any QB in the league except Michael Vick, he can get to the edge like a running back, he keeps passing plays alive with his feet. The Chiefs' lack of a pass rush will most likely hurt them on Sunday. They can't expect another turnover meltdown from the Niners, they're going to have to lineup & beat Frisco, a pretty tall order.
The Iowa Hawkeyes have lost running back Jewel Hampton for the second year in a row to a torn ACL. This time it's his left knee that will require season-ending surgery.
Here's a disturbing trend for Falcon fans, left tackle Sam Baker has two holding penalties in each of their games. I always thought Baker was way down on muscle & his agility was not good enough to overcome it. He was run over, around & thru in week one against Pittsburgh, a game I watched from start to finish. In their blowout over Arizona, I watched only a handful of snaps, but I did see Baker drag Cardinal DE Calais Campbell to the turf. This could be a real problem for a playoff contender.
So do you remember the personal foul call on Cleveland center Alex Mack in Sunday's game with the Chiefs? Mack admitted yesterday it was in retaliation for defensive end Shaun Smith's "grabbing his private parts." Mack said "he shouldn't be able to do that should he?" In a perfect world, the answer is no. But in reality & the bottom of the pile is all about reality, the answer is "there's no way to stop it." Former Nebraska & Oakland Raider quarterback David Humm worked with Linda for years & he told horror stories "from the bottom of the pile." Biting, pinching & grabbing, whatever it took was fair game. It isn't reserved for defensive players either, ever heard of Conrad Dobler? Called by many the "dirtiest player in the NFL" Dobler bit, pinched & grabbed with the best of them. Mack, a 2nd year player form Cal, better get used to some of the saltier players around the league. What they do isn't legal, but just try & stop them. Smith didn't get penalized but in retaliation, Mack did.
