CHARGER INJURY LIST EXTENSIVE, BOISE LOSES A BACK & SAINTS KICKER GETS THE DREADED "VOTE OF CONFIDENCE"

The San Diego Chargers, off to a 1-2 start, already without leading wide receiver Vincent Jackson & left tackle Marcus McNeill, have some serious injury concerns. OLB Shawne Merriman suffered a calf injury early in their loss to Seattle & his backup Larry English sustained a broken foot. Merriman's availability for Sunday's game with Arizona isn't known yet, but English had surgery & will be lost for 4-6 weeks. Starting right guard Louis Vasquez sprained his MCL & will be lost for 1-2 games. James Holt, reserve linebacker & special teams player was placed on injured reserve. Deep snapper Ryan Neil was also placed on I.R. the third deep snapper shelved for the season. Ethan Albright was signed to be the Chargers 4th deep snapper this season. McNeill won't be eligible to play until after week 6 after holding out in a contract dispute. His replacement, Brandyn Dombrowski, was eaten alive Sunday by Seattle DE Chris Clemmons. Vasquez is a road grader in the run game & his absence could really affect their effectiveness of their ground game.

Trent Edwards was released by the Buffalo Bills on Monday & the Jacksonville Jaguars claimed him on Tuesday. The NY Jets also put in a claim for his services.

This Shaun Smith alleged man-zone groping & grabbing is most likely real. He pulled this move on 2nd year center Alex Mack in the Browns' game & last Sunday he did it to Niner rookie Anthony Davis. He wasn't flagged by game officials in either contest. He got inside their heads & prompted them to commit personal foul penalties the officials didn't miss. When the Chiefs play Indy after the bye week, 10-year veteran Ryan Diem will line up at right tackle & 12-year man, Jeff Saturday starts at center. Translation: don't expect Smith to continue this B.S.

Arizona wide receiver Steve Breaston underwent arthroscopic knee surgery & will miss the next two games. He is currently Arizona's leading receiver.

Boise State running back D.J. Harper tore his ACL in Saturday's game with Oregon State. It's the second time in two seasons Harper sustained a season-ending ACL injury. This is definitely is big loss to the Broncos, Harper had 160 yards & two scores on just 18 carries before his injury. Jeremy Avery will now move into the primary backup role behind starter Doug Martin.

Three-time Pro Bowl special teams player, Kassim Osgood, experienced a harrowing evening with his new girlfriend on Monday night. The Jacksonville Jaguar was spending a quiet night at home with his 19-year old girlfriend when her ex-boyfriend burst in, gun in hand. He began pistol-whipping Osgood as the young lady jumped over the balcony railing onto the lawn below. When 20-year old Julian Barletto pursued his ex, Osgood ran into the bedroom & barricaded the door. Barletto than began shooting at his ex-girlfriend who returned fire with a gun she retrieved from her car. Osgood then jumped out of the 2nd floor window, sustaining a few bumps & bruises. The 30-year old Osgood might want to be a little more careful about his choices from the girlfriend pool, especially that 19-year old girlfriend pool.

Does anyone else find this Mike Shanahan mystique to be a mirage? He was touted as the savior when he signed with the Redskins. Let's examine the record shall we? In the opener, Dallas literally gave them the game, any arguments? In week two, the Skins blew a 17-point 3rd quarter lead, losing to Houston. last Sunday, Washington blew a 2nd half lead in losing by 2 touchdowns to previously winless St. Louis. Since Denver's 1998 Super Bowl win, Shanahan has won one playoff game. So with John Elway, Shanahan's post season record is 7-1, after Elway's retirement, the record fell of to 1-5. I've always thought he was way over rated. Let's see how the Redskins fare this year & next before Shanahan is fast-tracked into the Hall of Fame. He rode Elway like a mule, let's see how far he gets in Washington.

The Saints, fresh off their overtime loss on Sunday at the hands of division rival Atlanta, have brought in 46-year old veteran placekicker John Carney. Garrett Hartley, the hero of the NFC Championship game, missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime allowing the Falcons the opportunity to drive for their own winning field goal. Today Hartley's agent, Eric Burkhart, said he "has been assured by the Saints Hartley is still the future of the kicking game in New Orleans." The dreaded "vote of confidence" is the last thing any struggling NFL player or coach wants to hear.
