ANOTHER TIGER IN TROUBLE, BAD INJURY NEWS FOR EAGLES, ANOTHER TITAN FLIPS THE BIRD & A FEW WEEKEND THOUGHTS

Yet another Missouri Tiger has run afoul of the law. Jimmy Burge, sophomore nose tackle, was stopped by Columbia Police for weaving in traffic. He was charged with drinking while driving. He passed the breathalyzer test as his blood/alcohol level was below the .08 allowed by law. No word from Gary Pinkel as to what he plans to do to his backup nose tackle. What the hell has happened in Columbia this year?

The Philadelphia Eagles got some bad news on the injury front. After Michael Vick was crunched at the goaline, he went to the locker room & didn't return to the Philly sideline. After an MRI this morning, it was determined Vick has cartilage & ligament damage to his rib & sternum area. He's having difficulty taking a deep breath & is in extreme pain. I suffered three cracked ribs way back in 1972 & I'll tell you it's brutally painful. Sneezing, coughing or stretching will bring tears to your eyes. Running back LeSean McCoy also suffered a cracked rib in yesterday's loss to Washington. I doubt either player will be able to go on Sunday against San Francisco. Now Andy Reid has to try to pump up the quarterback he discarded just two weeks ago, Kevin Kolb.

Green Bay's Clay Mathews continues to make his case for the league's best defensive player in 2010. The outside linebacker recorded 3 tackles, 2 of them for loss & his 7th sack of the year in yesterday's 28-26 win over Detroit. The Packers lost their rookie safety Morgan Burnett for the season with a torn ACL. He has been a starter since the beginning of the preseason, so this loss will hurt.

San Diego will be without starting strong safety Steve Gregory for the next four games. He was suspended by the NFL for violating the leagues' policy on banned substances. That doesn't really explain the violation, was it pot or performance enhancing drugs? Either way, losing your leading tackler isn't a good thing.

Last night my bleary eyes missed my notes on the Frisco-Atlanta game. I watched every play, Atlanta was my only loser all weekend. The bone-headed play cornerback Nate Clements made with 1:37 left in the game cost the Niners their first win. After an interception near midfield, Clements set sail down the far sideline with a blocker out front, all he needed to do was run out of bounds or get down. Instead he continued running & Falcon WR Roddy White ran him down & punched the ball out. Offensive guard Harvey Dahl, also hustling all the way, recovered Clements' fumble at the Falcon 7-yardline. Matt Ryan then hit Roddy White twice to get Atlanta in field goal position & PK Matt Bryant kicked the game winner from 46-yards. The exact same thing happened last year in a Frisco-Atlanta game when Dre' Bly picked off an errant Ryan pass & headed off for the endzone & just like yesterday, Roddy White caught him & punched the ball out of his hands, the fumble was recovered by Atlanta. Apparently what happened last year didn't register with Clements. For a team in dire straits for a win, throwing one away like this is shameful.

I also wanted to mention former Mizzou safety William Moore's performance in the game. He intercepted Alex Smith once, forced a fumble, recorded a sack & forced Smith to intentionally ground a pass costing the Niners 10-yards & a down. He looked like he did as a college junior, making plays all over the field. Good for him.

Last year Titans' owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for giving fans the bird with both hands from his private box. Yesterday, in Tennessee Titan tradition, defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil was unhappy with an officials' call of offsides on his guys & flipped him the bird from the sideline. The league wasted no time in slapping Cecil with a $40,000 fine for his gesture, it was unmistakable.

Very nice Chuck

Stewart Mandel of SI.com raised a great point regarding Oregon's jump over Boise State in both national polls. He said he couldn't get past the way Boise State totally dominated Oregon twice in 2008 & 09. He's right, Oregon didn't get a first down until midway thru the third quarter in last year's game & his description of "totally dominated" is absolutely correct. But that was then & this is now right? The poll is all about the 2010 season right? So why oh why didn't Oregon also vault over Ohio State after their lifeless 24-13 win over a lower-tier Illinois team? Maybe pollsters remember the way the Buckeyes beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl, could that be it? Because Oregon has been way more impressive than the Buckeyes this season. As Mandel asks, "could the pollsters be practicing selective memory." If they don't get by Ohio State in the polls, the Ducks will be locked out of the BCS championship game, wouldn't a Rose Bowl matchup with Boise State make for a great Rose Bowl? I guarantee the Ducks want no part of Boise State in the Rose Bowl.

Speaking of Boise State, the Eastern Washington Eagles decided to take Boise's blue field to another level. They debuted their new playing surface this season & like Boise State' Smurf Turf, it's drawing a lot of attention. I love the color, I just don't want it on a football field. Unlike many of you, I have no problem with Boise State's blue field.

Pretty strong stuff 'eh? What do you think?
