NINERS OWNER BOASTING, TARHEEL TRIO OUT.....PERMANANTLY, PACKERS FALLING APART & PRE-BCS FORECAST
Last night immediately after his team lost, San Francisco Forty-Niners owner Jed York texted ESPN to boast "we're going to win the division." He ought to worry about his team winning a game, one stinkin' game. The 0-5 Niners are realistically still in the hunt for the division title with the lousy competition the NFC West features. Still, York should leave this type of grandstanding to people who really know how to do it right, like Jerry Jones.
North Carolina dismissed defensive tackle Marvin Austin from the football program for his involvement with an agent. Two other Tar Heels were declared permanently ineligible, wide receiver Greg Little & defensive end Robert Quinn. Quinn & Austin were considered sure 1st round prospects for next April's draft. Once again, bad decisions cost another program elite players plus millions of dollars down the road.
Yesterday's Oakland win against the Chargers broke a 13-straight run of San Diego victories in this series. The Chargers have real problems, blackouts, holdout Vincent Jackson, Shawne Merriman, no pass rush, horrible special teams & a revived Chiefs team leading the division.
The Green Bay Packers are falling apart quickly, the injury bug has become viral. With starters RB Ryan Grant & safety Morgan Burnett already on I.R. it's gotten much worse. Yesterday TE Jermichael Finley suffered a knee injury that will require arthroscopic surgery. Backup tight end Donald Lee was also injured. Special teams leader, Derrick Martin, blew out his knee & will mostly likely be lost for the season. Leading tackler Nick Barnett underwent surgery today & might be out for the year. NFL sack leader Clay Mathews pulled his hamstring & nose tackle Kris Jenkins sustained a lower leg injury as well. None of these players returned to the game yesterday. Then on what turned out to be Green Bay's last offensive snap, QB Aaron Rodgers sustained a concussion throwing an interception.
ESPN's Brad Edwards, the network's BCS guru, posted his pre-BCS forecast this morning & it will cause a lot of very heated discussion. I have no problem with any of his speculation, because I think he's right, plus Edwards has been very accurate in past years. The first BCS standings will come this Sunday, but here is Edwards' projected BCS standings thru last Saturday. Think this won't stir up a hornet's nest?
