V. JAX TO SIGN, WHO ISN'T PRACTICING, FAVRE TAKES A BAD HIT & URBAN MEYER IS A FRAUD
The San Diego Chargers have been without their #1 wide receiver all season. Holdout Vincent Jackson has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender but that is going to change. Faced with being a restricted free agent all over again next season & forfeiting a full year toward his being fully vested in the NFL pension plan, Jackson has decided to sign a prorated tender offer. His bargaining power was diminished with what has happened so far this season. QB Phillip Rivers averaged 84-more yards passing this season even without Jackson. The Chargers got LT Marcus McNeill to sign his tender offer & 5-days later, he gets a hefty 5-year contract extension, maybe Jackson thinks there's hope for him. I don't think so, if they're willing to release Shawne Merriman, a former 1st round pick, getting nothing in return, I doubt the Chargers will hesitate for a second before they let him go after the season. The only other restricted free agent still out there, New England guard Logan Mankins appears close to signing as well. This news is huge for the Patriots, Mankins is the best offensive lineman on their roster.
Wednesday's list of non-practicing players around the league due to injury could field a playoff caliber team. RB Ray Rice, RB Jahvid Best, RB LeSean McCoy, RB Peyton Hillis, QB Bruce Gradkowski, QB Michael Vick, QB Matthew Stafford, WR Dez Bryant, WR Legedu Naanee, WR Austin Collie, WR Pierre Garcon, TE Kellen Winslow Jr., OT Trent Williams, OT Jason Peters, DE Osi Umenyiora, DE Mario Williams, LB Lance Briggs, LB Brian Cushing, LB Clay Mathews, LB Sean Weatherspon & CB Darrell Revis. All this carnage in week 5 & the league wants to move to an 18-game schedule?
This is one of the weirdest series of roster moves I've seen in a few years. The San Diego Chargers released long snapper Ethan Albright & signed Mike Windt. This is their 5th long snapper this season.
Chad "85" said today "when I come back from the bye week, I'm going back to the Chad of old." Really? "I've been somewhat distracted & I need to get back to being a distraction to our opponents, not to myself" he added. Being a distraction to opponents must mean sending Pepto Bismal to next weeks secondary, a tactic he used in the past. He wants to "get in their heads." Too bad he waited until the Bengals' 6th game of the season. It might already be too late.
I had to laugh watching a video clip from WCCO-TV in Milwaukee last night. They had a camera running from a distance showing Brett Favre walking down the sideline before the start of practice. He was playing catch as he walked & someone yelled at him, he turned his head & a pass hit him flush in family jewels. Favre bent over at the waist & then fell headfirst into the turf, grabbing his "man region." I know it's sadistic for me to laugh, it's not like I haven't had it happen to me about a dozen times, but it just cracked me up, sorry.
Concussed Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers returned to practice today, but it is yet to be determined if he will be cleared to play against the Dolphins this Sunday.
I'm so very tired of college football players getting arrested, kids who have almost no accountability. Kids who have seldom, if ever, been told "No." Kids with an entitlement mentality that is off the charts. Some programs aren't too selective in their recruiting, taking chances on young men with a checkered past or some that actually have police records. Others stay away & their programs don't have their own parole officer on staff. Urban Meyer came from Utah, where he had zero problems regarding off-field discipline, of course most players on his roster were Mormons. He talked about a family atmosphere in Gainesville. The Gators have won two BCS Championships under Meyer, but in his 5 1/2 years as Florida's head coach, his players have been arrested thirty times. Three-zero.The latest arrest came last month when leading wide receiver Chris Rainey was arrested for death threats & stalking his ex-girlfriend. He texted her "now it's time to die" after a heated argument. Rainey was suspended indefinitely but last week he was permitted to come back to the team & he will play this Saturday against Mississippi State. His trial isn't until after the regular season, but it looks as though he will work out a plea bargain so he can continue playing into the bowl season. Florida has lost their last two games, Meyer was out-coached by Les Miles of all people, last week. He is looking pretty desperate with this move. So desperate, he's willing to compromise what "Family Values" he has left. There's tremendous pressure to win with this program, but at some point a house-cleaning has to happen before the entire program goes down the drain & those two BCS titles are just a memory. When the inmates start running the asylum, this can happen & it can happen in a hurry. With every arrest & every time Meyer looks the other way or rationalizes the offense, he becomes a bigger fraud.
My "office pool picks" will be posted later tonight with an interesting sidebar.
