COWBOYS ALL DONE, VIKINGS CLOSE TOO, NCAA INFIRMARY REPORT, BLACKMON BUSTED & WHO'S ON NFL HOT SEAT?
The Dallas Cowboys had already painted themselves into a corner, starting 1-4. They jumped on two early Eli Manning picks & turned them into 10-first quarter points. Then the roof caved in on any remaining hopes Dallas fans had. Giant linebacker Michael Boley roared in on a blitz, wasn't picked up by fullback Chris Gronkowski & slammed Dallas QB Tony Romo to the turf. It was a squeaky clean hit but the instant it happened, you knew Romo was really hurt. Broken clavicle, out 6-8 weeks, game, set, match for the Cowboys. Oh, Dallas kicked a field goal, then watched as rookie Dez Bryant returned a punt for a score running the Dallas lead to 20-7. Then we watched the Giants run off 31-consecutive points. New York appears to be the best team in the NFC. They run the ball very well, they play very aggressive defense, they can pressure the passer down after down & they have three wide receivers who might be the best group in the league since Anquan Boldin left Arizona. The Cowboys got back in the game in the last three minutes thanks to Bryant scoring two more times, but the hill was just too tall to climb. The last time the Cowboys started as poorly as 1-5 was 1989 when they went 1-15. They're not that bad, but with Romo gone for quite a while, I can't see Dallas winning more than 6-7 games & that's if they really get hot. Now that the Cowboys are just an also-ran, we might get to hear more about other teams from the national media, maybe.
Brett Favre's 291-consecutive start streak is in danger, he has two fractures in his ankle. He hasn't played well, he's been dissed by a couple of teammates as well as his coach & the NFL investigation is still up in the air. Because of that & Minnesota's defensive woes, they're probably spiraling out of contention. So now we get the Cowboys off the front page & possibly Favre & the Vikings too.
Speaking of the Vikings, Brad Childress called their loss in Green Bay Sunday evening "the worst officiated NFL game I've ever seen." Apparently the NFL agrees, they admitted the call on reversing Visanthe Shiancoe's touchdown catch was the wrong decision. That's what you want to hear after you lose a divisional game by 4-points. There were also two other non-scoring mistakes by the officiating crew.
For those of you who wager on college football games, pay attention. Arizona State QB Steven Threet suffered a concussion & might not play this Saturday vs. Washington State. Colorado QB Tyler Hansen sustained a ruptured spleen Saturday against Texas Tech & will not play this weekend at Oklahoma. Cincinnati QB Zach Collaros suffered a knee sprain & might miss up to 3-weeks. Arkansas QB Ryan Mallet is getting beat up, a concussion 10-days ago against Auburn & a knee & ankle sprain last Saturday. He is expected to play but these injuries might be taking a toll on his performance. Penn State QB Robert Bolden won't go this Saturday because of a concussion he suffered last Saturday. One half of the "Thunder & Lightening" backfield for the Wisconsin Badgers, James White, the lightening, suffered a knee sprain but since they have a bye week, he might return for the Purdue game on the 6th.
The formula that has the BCS standings jumbled every week, highly ranked teams on the road against lesser ranked teams, will play out again this Saturday. So far in 2010, those higher ranked teams are 6-17 against the lower ranked teams. Oregon @ USC, Auburn @ Ole Miss, Mizzou @ Nebraska & Michigan State @ Iowa. It's possible the number of undefeated teams will be down to 2 or 3 by Saturday night.
Early lines on some of the notable games on Saturday:
Oregon -7 @ USC
Auburn -7 @ Ole Miss
Mizzou @ Nebraska -7 1/2
Michigan State @ Iowa -7
Oklahoma State -5 @ Kansas State
The Tulsa World is reporting "All-World" WR Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State was stopped on a Texas highway late last night for going 92 in a 60 MPH zone. He & two friends were returning to Stillwater after attending the New York-Dallas game last night. The officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol was noticed when he spoke to Blackmon & by Texas law, anyone suspected of DUI who is under 21-years of age is arrested. Blackmon posted bond this morning & went back to Stillwater. No word from coach Mike Gundy as of yet. Blackmon leads the country in per game receiving yards with 158, he's caught 14 touchdowns out of his 61 receptions. He had a monster day vs. Nebraska catching 5-passes for 157-yards & two touchdowns while matched up with All-American cornerback Prince Amukumara of Nebraska.

The NFL hot seat is getting crowded by as many as eight head coaches. Dallas' Wade Phillips after last night, is most certainly on that hot seat. So is Carolinas' John Fox, Frisco' Mike Singletary, Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio, Minnesota's Brad Childress, Chicago's Lovie Smith, Denver's Josh McDaniel & maybe even Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis. That's eight coaches, one-quarter of the league's 32-teams. Replacements? Some big names are still floating around. Bill Cowher, John Gruden, Brian Billick & Tony Dungy. All four are currently working in television & have publicly expressed little interest in returning to football.
