WEDNESDAY NEWS & NOTES

The Kansas Jayhawks' season had a brief high-spot with their win over Georgia Tech, but otherwise it's been a disaster for 1st year coach Turner Gill. Now the 2-5 'Hawks face a crisis at quarterback. Starter Jordan Webb has been injured off & on, now it's on again with a shoulder injury. His backup Kale Pick suffered a concussion & has already been ruled out for Saturday's Iowa State game. Now it looks as tho Quinn Mecham wil get his first start against the Cyclones, fresh off their win against Texas.

Arizona State QB Steven Threet has been cleared to return to practice & will play Saturday versus Washington State.

Arkansas is hurting too. Both starting wide receivers, Greg Childs & Joe Adams, have missed practice this week with ankle ailments. QB Ryan Mallett is banged up all over the past two weeks, concussion, knee sprain, bruised throwing shoulder etc. But he'll start Saturday against Vanderbilt.

Boise State downed Louisiana Tech 49-20 last night. They did it on a Tuesday night with no World Series or any other football games to keep BCS voters away from seeing their play. I doubt it will do make any difference, they'll be lucky to hang on to the third spot in the BCS poll right? Starting QB Kellen Moore threw one of his touchdown passes to WR Austin Pettis then later caught a touchdown pass thrown by Pettis. Moore has 18 touchdown passes against 2 interceptions, remarkable.

How pathetic is the Mike Martz-Jay Cutler Chicago offense? How about 28-straight failed 3rd down conversion attempts? Twenty-eight straight? Are you serious? The Bears convert 17.9% of their third downs, the 31st team in the league converts 25.3%. The league average is 35.8%. I told you before the season began the Martz-Cutler combo wouldn't work. How much longer will Bear ownership stick with this coaching staff?

Oakland's leading wide receiver, Louis Murphy, will not play Sunday against Seattle because he sustained a bruised lung. That description came from Murphy, I've never heard of such an ailment, but then I'm not a doctor.

The Bengals put Adam "Pacman" Jones on injured reserve with a herniated disc.

The Chiefs signed veteran linebacker Mark Simoneau today. The 10-year veteran was drafted in the 3rd round by the Falcons in 2000. He also played for Philadelphia & New Orleans. To make roster space, Kansas City released DE Atiyyah Ellison who was just signed. Dexter McCluster was using crutches & a walking boot yesterday around the practice facility. He was back at practice today but didn't participate in drills or any running. The Buffalo Bills announced today they are scrapping their conversion to the 3-4 defense & will return to a more traditional 4-3. They admitted they do not have the personnel to play a 3-4.
