HOW GOOD IS BOISE? LISTEN TO PAT HILL. PLUS MIZZOU & CHIEFS NEWS
I alerted you as to the starting time of the Fresno State-Boise State game this evening. I told you the station, unfortunately, the Pitt-Texas hoops contest ran long & the football game started about 25-minutes later than it was scheduled. I hope that didn't scare you off, because if it did, you missed what was Boise's best game of the season. The Broncos, running their 2010 record to 10-0, winning their 24th game in a row, demolished 6-3 Fresno State, 51-0. It marked the first shutout of the Bulldogs since 1998. It was the worst defeat in Pat Hill's 14-year tenure at Fresno. It was Boise's 3rd shutout of the season. Prior to tonight, Fresno State hadn't been held under 27-points against anybody this season. The Bulldogs had just 125-yards of total offense & were 1 of 12 on 3rd down. The Broncos, held to just 3-points in the 1st quarter, totaled 516-total yards.
If you missed this game & think I don't know what I'm talking about, listen to Fresno State coach Pat Hill, he says it better than anybody in his post-game press conference.
"I think the truth of the matter is people are scared to play them. They don't want to play them. I have no problem saying it, I'll say it, I'll take Boise State against anyone in the country. What else do they have to do? They're on the verge of their 4th undefeated season in the last six years. You gotta be kidding me."
"Someday we got to wake up & say 'We just can't listen to people who control all the money, we got to listen to the people that have the best teams.' They're a great team, I've said this before, they're an elite football team, there's no doubt in my mind."
"We have never been manhandled like that. We got dominated tonight at the line of scrimmage. last year we played Cincinnati(12-1) & Wisconsin(10-3) & I said then Boise State was the best team we played. People just don't want to hear it."
The Bronco wide receivers, Titus Young & Austin Pettis, caught 18 passes for 257-yards & two scores apiece. To that Hill said "Those wide receivers tonight, is there a better pair in the SEC? No I don't think so."
Quarterback Kellen Moore got off to a slow start with a fumble & a pick in the first quarter & then he got on track for a 27 of 38 passing night for 333-yards & 4 touchdowns. The Broncos were 10 of 13 on 3rd down. Their kicker was 3 of 3 with a 50-yarder, they recorded 7 sacks etc. etc. etc.
Hill is correct in every way, this is an elite team & no one wants to play them. After all the putdowns by heavyweight coaches & members of the media, losing to Boise State just isn't an option. make someone else play them, you know, like TCU maybe? No point in sullying Wisconsin's reputation or Oregon or Auburn right? Hill is 100% correct when he says no one wants to play them but I have a sneaking suspicion someone is going to get stuck facing them in a major BCS bowl game & then we'll see just how unqualified the Broncos are to be in a game like that. This is all provided the Broncos win next Friday night in Reno against #18 Nevada. We'll know a lot more by time that game ends, the Iron Bowl matchup of Auburn-Alabama will be over as well as Arizona-Oregon.
Mizzou senior safety Jasper Simmons has apparently been dismissed from the team. Gary Pinkel suspended Simmons earlier in the season. Tho he failed to state the infraction, it's generally known on the Mizzou campus it stemmed from alcohol. He didn't travel with the Tigers to Ames Iowa yesterday.
Since Illinois has played their last "Arch Rivalry" game in St' Louis' Edward Jones Dome, the Tigers want another opponent for a St. Louis game. There's talk of a game in Busch Stadium, home of the Cardinals. The could be some tough logistics playing there during the non-conference part of the schedule in September as the Cards still need their park. This "football in a baseball stadium" is sort of a gimmicky kind of deal, witness the Wrigley Field contest this afternoon as well as the Army-Notre Dame contest at Yankee Stadium.
The Chiefs have ruled Tony Moeaki out for Sunday. He hasn't been cleared by doctors to return to practice after suffering a concussion against Denver. Jon McGraw is also out. Guards Brian Waters(groin) & Ryan Lilja(foot) are both questionable. This would present a real problem of the offensive line if both are unable to go on Sunday. Rookie Jon Asamoah would start again along with Rudy Niswanger I suppose. Todd Haley is walking around with a noticeable limp, of course he won't let anyone in on how he was injured.
