NEBRASKA GETS FLAGGED, OU & OSU HEAD FOR BEDLAM SHOWDOWN & MIZZOU GETS OUT OF AMES WITH A WIN
I have to admit, when I see that vein popping out on Bo Pelini's neck, it makes me smile. The guy is just wound too tight. I also like the fact he's never wrong & the world is out to get him, his team & everything Husker. But tonight I thought his Cornhuskers were the recipients of two of the worst calls I've seen this season. A phantom pass interference penalty & a ridiculous roughing the passer call. The latter occurred on third & long, so it allowed Texas A&M to stay on the field & eventually kick the winning field goal in a 9-6 win. Pelini's team was flagged for 16 penalties, totaling 145-yards, while A&M sustained two penalties for 10-yards. Honestly, most of Nebraska's penalties were justified & frankly, if Bo could keep his volcanic temper under control, the zebras might not reach for their flags so often. The vile language Bo aims at the officials is excessive, he's a lip readers delight. One of the unsportsmanlike penalties was called on him for one of his many tirades. When you start hurting your team that's already struggling, what good does it do? No one on his staff, including his own brother Carl, has any control over this extremely volatile head coach. QB Taylor Martinez got stepped on, re-injuring his ankle & he left the game. After he returned from a locker room exam, Pelini got in his face for about 30-seconds of screaming the "F" word over & over. No one had a clue what about Martinez set him off, Pelini declined to speak about after the game. If Nebraska can defeat Colorado next Friday in Lincoln, they will clinch the Big-12 North & a spot in the conference title game. If they don't, he might just implode right on the sideline, literally.
The Colorado Buffaloes upset Kansas State 44-36. Seems canning Dan Hawkins was a good thing. In a genuine show of class, the Colorado fans gave the largest senior day welcome to QB Cody Hawkins & his dad, Dan. Cody threw three touchdown passes & RB Rodney Stewart ran for 195-yards & 2 scores. If the Buffs can win in Lincoln, they will become bowl eligible in what will be their last season in the Big-12.
Oklahoma & Oklahoma State are headed for maybe the most important matchup in the history of their "Bedlam" series. State moved to 10-1 after whipping Kansas 48-14. The Cowboys have one of the most potent offenses in the nation, they totaled 597-total yards today. OU pounded Baylor 53-24 in Waco this evening. The 9-2 Sooners can win the Big-12 South if they beat OSU & A&M stumbles on Thanksgiving night at Texas. Look for about 1,000 yards of total offense in this game, it's in Stillwater.
Texas & Texas Tech returned to their winning ways, they found teams worse than them. Florida Atlantic took a 51-17 whippin' at the hands of the Longhorns. Tech crushed a Division 1AA school, Weber State, 64-21. The Red Raiders became bowl eligible with the win, but Texas is going to need a win over arch rival A&M to go bowling. That's a tall order for Mack Brown's team.
Mizzou is glad to be out of Ames Iowa. A gusty wind hampered the passing game as well as special teams & the kickoff temperature of 32 was made to feel more miserable with a wind chill of 22. And it just continued to get colder as the night progressed. The best part about the 14-0 win was the defense getting their second shutout of the season. Granted Iowa State was without their QB, Austin Arnaud, but anytime you pitch a shutout in a conference road game, it's reason for celebration. Overall the game was a total yawner, but since we like Tiger victories in this house, it certainly beat the crap out of what we'd watched the last last two road games in Lincoln & Lubbock. A win over hapless KU next Saturday will make the Tigers 10-2 & in good shape for a better bowl game than last year. But Mizzou fans better get used to the idea of going to Texas yet again, say the Alamo Bowl. The Holiday or Insight bowls are also possibilities.
Iowa choked another 4th quarter lead today, giving up ten 4th quarter points to Ohio State, losing 20-17. It was their 4th loss & it marked the 4th time they'd surrendered a 4th quarter lead. The Hawkeyes' four losses are by a total of 15-points & they gave up the go-ahead score late in the 4th quarter in each of them. Lotta 4's huh?
The Illinois-Northwestern game at Wrigley field wasn't such a novelty, not once Mikel Leshoure took over. The Illini running back carried 33 times for 330-yards & two touchdowns. The yardage total broke the Illinois single game record for yardage. He wasn't alone tho, Illinois ran for 519-yards as a team. They totaled only 40-yards passing. The one-way traffic on the Wrigley surface wasn't all that weird except when Northwestern ran an interception back for a score & both teams had to go all the way to the other end of the field to kick the extra point, that was strange.
Stanford's Andrew Luck had a big afternoon as the Cardinal stomped all over Cal in "The Big Game" 48-14. Just one week after the Bears held #1 Oregon to one offensive touchdown, Stanford shredded them. Luck was deadly accurate, 16 of 20 passing for 235-yards & two scores plus he ran for 72-yards on just 3 carries. If he comes out in April for the NFL Draft, he'll be the 1st player picked.
Poor Oregon State, lost their leading receiver, James Rodgers, several weeks ago, they lost a double overtime game by one point after Mike Riley decided to go for 2. The Beavers were beaten by PAC-10 doormat Washington State last week plus OSU & Wyoming are the only teams in college football this season to play both TCU & Boise State. But one thing you can depend on is when the USC Trojans come to town, regardless of their ranking, the Beavers will make their lives miserable. Once again Oregon State put it on USC 36-7. Now State can become bowl eligible by only having to beat Stanford & Oregon. Don't like their chances.
Michigan's Denard Robinson became the NCAA Division 1's all-time leading rusher as a quarterback, the first to ever top 1,500-yards on the ground. While this is exciting, his Wolverines were pounded by Wisconsin 48-28. Greg Robinson's horrific defense gets gashed again, the Badgers ran for 357-yards & that was without the teams leading runner, John Clay. Michigan is one of the worst tackling teams in the nation.
Can't recall seeing two successful Hail Mary pass completions for touchdowns in one day, but it happened today. First is was North Carolina State then later tonight Utah accomplished the rarely seen feat in a driving rainstorm.
I mentioned the other night we were short of bowl eligible teams, only 53 were eligible when I wrote the piece on Wednesday. This weeks' results put seven additional teams into the "bowl eligible" column. But another 6 were eliminated, we still need 10 more teams to get their 6th win or we might start scraping the bottom of the barrel to get enough teams to fill some of these moronic bowls.
