BCS TITLE PAIR IS SET, OU SENDS HUSKERS PACKIN' & UCONN(GAG) GETS INTO BCS
In two games that weren't even as close as the scores, 56-17(Auburn) & 37-20(Oregon), our mythical national title matchup is set. On January 10th, we see Oregon & Auburn battle in Glendale Arizona. WooHoo!
The final Big-12 Championship was highly entertaining, especially since Nebraska was on the losing end, 23-20. They don't have a single thing to whine about, is it possible they lost because they didn't play as well? Was it they were outplayed, out hustled & out coached? The zebras didn't screw the Huskers, they were flagged but 3 times for just 15-yards. OU converted just one of 15 third downs. So how is it the mighty, mighty Huskers lost? After jumping out to a 17-0 lead, they did almost nothing in a positive way. They committed four turnovers, they converted but only one third down after the second quarter began. Oklahoma's Landry Jones passed them to death, 329-yards in the last three quarters. OU ran just enough, 112-yards, to keep Nebraska' defense guessing but what made the difference was OU's defense. They swarmed, they covered, they stuffed, they sacked, Nebraska was almost helpless against the Sooner defense. Except for the few down when Rex Burkhead ran the Wildcat, the Huskers were mostly impotent. OU linebacker Travis Williams was Johnny on the spot as he intercepted a Taylor Martinez pass in the endzone & recovered two second half fumbles. The Sooner defensive speed got to the edge stopping the Husker run game & then in passing situations, they went after Martinez. They got him 6 times in the 2nd half. Oklahoma capped the biggest comeback in Big-12 Championship game history by coming from a 17-0 deficit & skunking Nebraska in the 2nd half. So now the Nebraska Cornhuskers can move on, their act has grown old here in Big-12 country. Good luck & good riddance.
Virginia Tech won the ACC title game, whipping Florida State 44-33. Christian Ponder was a late scratch for the Noles, but backup E.J. Manuel was decent in relief, their defense just had no answer for Tech.
UConn, 8-4 UConn, will play in a BCS bowl game & reap millions in the process. Whoever they play will be a double-digit favorite to be sure. The Huskies' four losses were even less impressive than their 8-4 record. They lost to 7-5 Michigan 30-10, 8-4 Temple 30-16, 6-6 Louisville 26-0 & they even lost to 4-8 Rutgers 27-24. This is ridiculous, one BIG TEN team with an 11-1 record won't get a BCS bowl, neither will three 10-2 Big-12 teams. Boise State, Utah, Nevada & LSU won't be in the BCS either. I sincerely doubt UConn could beat 2 of these teams. I can live with Va Tech making the BCS, after losing to Boise & James Madison to start the season, the ripped off 11-straight wins, most of them very convincingly. But UConn? I think I just spit up a little in my mouth.
Now that the regular season is over, save the traditional Army-Navy game next Saturday, I have no doubt Cam Newton will win the Heisman Trophy. The other three that should be invited to New York for the ceremony are Stanford QB Andrew Luck, Boise State QB Kellen Moore & Oregon RB LaMichael James. Newton could very well win by the largest margin in recent history, the gap between him & the rest was sizable.
All of the remaining bowl bids will go out by tomorrow night, I'll have a complete recap of them plus Chiefs analysis & the day in the NFL late night tomorrow. Good night!
