GATORS' MEYER TO RESIGN TODAY.......REALLY?

The internet is alive with rumors today, this one seems to have legs. Florida's Urban Meyer intends to step down as head coach of the Gator program. No explanation has been given, but a press conference has been scheduled for 6 PM Eastern today. Denver Broncos & Tim Tebow? I doubt it, maybe his health concerns that shelved him for a few weeks in the spring, have returned.

UPDATE @ 1:44 PM: The University of Florida has issued a statement from Coach Urban Meyer & the school stating Meyer will resign as head football coach. The statement refers to 25-years of college coaching & the toll it has taken on his family. The move he is making is directly tied to having more time to spend with his family. He will coach the Gators for the last time on New Year's Day in the Outback Bowl. The statement did not elaborate on any future coaching plans for Meyer or did it mention to any possible successors.

Is Meyer the coaching version of Brett Favre? I don't see him coaching in 2011, after that, who knows? His success as a head coach is staggering. At Florida his record was 64-15 with two BCS titles. At Utah & Bowling Green, Meyer's teams went 39-8 for an overall record of 103-23. As far as who will succeed Meyer in Gainesville, the name mentioned all the time is Mississippi State head coach & former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen. The speculation begins right there.
