BIG TEN BOSSES NEED TO ZIP IT, COLTS REBOUND & PELINI TO MIAMI?
Were heard from Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee 10-days ago followed by his apology & attempt to extricate his foot from his mouth. Now Conference Commissioner Jim Delaney has entered the "bash the little guys" arena. Tuesday night he said "the Big Ten has already sacrificed enough, allowing other teams access to the Rose Bowl." Delaney added another zinger "then they want a million bucks to play them." Sacrifice, allowing access? Maybe Boise State & TCU should forget about playing football altogether, they just don't measure up to the standards of the almighty Big Ten. Wanting a million bucks to play them? Once again, Delaney, like E. Gordon before him, will need to be set straight. Ohio State signed a deal to play Colorado in Columbus next fall. The mighty Buffaloes won 5-games in 2010, but they will receive $1.4 million for the game. Better to pay a stiff major money than pay Boise or TCU much less, but run the risk of losing. Spare me your outrage Mr. Delaney, like E. Gordon before you, get your facts straight & lose your pompous indignant act, it's really pathetic.
Hope this is simply a weird coincidence & not bad karma, but on the same day the Chiefs began notifying season ticket holders about buying playoff tickets, Matt Cassel has to undergo an appendectomy. That's a coincidence right?
A name made famous in the Nebraska football program, Steinkuhler, is in the news again & not in a good way. Baker, son of Outland Trophy Winner Dean Steinkuhler, was suspended for the upcoming Holiday Bowl. He was pulled over by Lincoln Police the other night around 2 AM for driving without any lights & swerving from lane to lane. He blew a stout .115 & was hauled off to jail. The 6' 6" 290-lb. sophomore defensive tackle started all 13-games this season.
Cam Newton's father will not be in attendance for Saturday evening's Heisman Trophy presentation. How sad is that? Your son wins the most prestigious award in amateur sports & he has to pass so his presence doesn't become a distraction.
The Colts & Peyton Manning rebounded in style tonight, beating the Tennessee Titans 30-28, keeping them in contention for the AFC South title. This time it was the Colts' opponents making the mistakes, a strip & fumble plus a center snap that sailed over the punter's head were the difference in the game. Indy capitalized on both errors with touchdowns. Manning snapped his turnover tailspin with a clean night. The Colts pulled within half a game of the Jaguars, the division leader. The Colts face Jacksonville next week, then a trip to Oakland before finishing the season with the Titans again.
For everybody on the Oregon bandwagon, I have a couple of stats that might interest you. Auburn beat 6 teams ranked in the top-25 & 9 bowl teams. Oregon beat only 1 team ranked in the top-25 & just 4 bowl teams. Auburn's opponents had a combined record of 76-50 while the Ducks opponents had a 54-69 record. I'm not saying Oregon can't beat Auburn, I'm just pointing out the difference between their paths to the BCS title game. It's what I do.
One of the rumors percolating on the net today concerned the University of Miami's talent search for a new head football coach. The name that kept coming around was Nebraska's Bo Pelini. Then early this evening, the word out of Lincoln was the Cornhuskers had given Pelini permission to talk to the Hurricanes. Stop the rumor mill, Dr. Tom said tonight the university had not given nor would they, Pelini permission to talk to anyone while he is under contract with Nebraska.
