COUPLE OF QUICKIES
The Chiefs & running back Jamaal Charles agreed upon a new 5-year deal worth $32.5 million with $13 million of it guaranteed. This is a great move for both parties. Charles currently stands third in NFL rushing stats with 1,137-yards on just 182-carries. His 6.2 average per carry is way better than anyone else in the entire league. Charles also carries a 6.0 average for his career. His running mate in Kansas City's backfield, Thomas Jones, has 765-yards with 4 games to play, both could top the 1,000-yard mark which would be a franchise first.
This development left me scratching my head. The Football Writers Association of America released their All-American team just a few hours before the Heisman Trophy is to be awarded in New York. The FWAA's All-American QB? Boise State's Kellen Moore, not Cam Newton, who's expected to win the Heisman. Are they throwing the Boise QB a bone? Are they really going to vote for someone else in protest of Newton's father's "play for pay" plan? Whether you like Newton's dad or not, Cam has made more impact this season than any other player in college football & there's been no proof Cam knew of his father's bad intentions. Isn't that what these post-season awards are all about, giving it to the most deserving athlete? I love Kellen Moore, I had him winning the Heisman way back in August & he will be there tonight as one of the four finalists. But Newton deserves the award.
The New York Giants will be spending the night in Kansas City tonight because their charter flight from Newark to Minneapolis was diverted to KCI after the FAA closed the airport in the Twin Cities. Blowing & drifting snow have created blizzard-like conditions in Minnesota. The NFL might have to change the kickoff time from 1 PM ET to 3:15 to accommodate the Giants early morning travel. In other weather-related news, the Patriots-Bears game scheduled for Soldier Field in Chicago could be very difficult to say the least. The weather forecast I just saw called for a kickoff temperature of 18 degrees with wind gusts from 30-50 MPH. Lovely. Cleveland & Buffalo could be challenged by the weather too. They will be pelted by freezing rain or heavy snow. Home games in Washington, New York, Pittsburgh & Carolina could also see heavy rain with temps just over the freezing mark.
