POLICE BLOTTER, SUSPENSIONS, A GARNISHMENT & IS COWHER COACHING IN '11?

How many readers remember me telling you last January about the Oklahoma State cornerback, Perish Cox, who was suspended from the OSU team by coach Mike Gundy for missing curfew just before the Cotton Bowl? O.K. not that many I'm guessing. He couldn't tear himself away from his girlfriend & he missed curfew two nights before the game. Well Cox & his girlfriend are back in the news, the Denver Bronco rookie was arrested last night for sexual assault on the same girlfriend. I remember listening to him speak at the combine, saying his arrest while at OSU & his suspension before the Cotton Bowl were learning experiences, he'd never be any trouble to whatever team drafted him. Cox obviously can say the right thing, he just can't follow thru on them.

Carolina's Duke Robinson was suspended on Friday for violating the league's controlled substance policy. The suspension is four games but Robinson hasn't decided if he will appeal the suspension. It was not stipulated if it was drug-related or performance-enhancing drug related.

New England rookie linebacker Brandon Spikes was suspended for four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs. Spikes will begin the suspension immediately so that he can be eligible to return for the playoffs. Spikes has been a starter since the first week of the season.

Another bad boy, Cincinnati cornerback Adam "PacMan" Jones, will be missing his paychecks beginning this week. A federal judge ordered the garnishment of his weekly game checks until a $250,000 debt to a car dealer was satisfied. He was over a year behind on payments for a 2005 Lamborghini & a 2006 Bentley. Jones' weekly paycheck amounts to $32,000 & he forfeit the last four checks of the season as well as the first four next season. That is, if he's still drawing an NFL paycheck.

It looks as tho Brett Favre's record of consecutive starts may fall this Sunday. His shoulder sprain has not allowed him to throw the ball this week in practice. With the Giants coming to town, I don't see Favre surviving their withering pass rush.

The Chiefs-Chargers injury lowdown is as follows:
QB Matt Cassel   No way he plays
S   Kendrick Lewis  Ankle may keep the rookie sidelined yet again

WR Patrick Crayton  Out with a wrist injury
WR Legadu Naanee  doubtful with a hamstring pull
TE  Antonio Gates   didn't practice all week, but he'll play, listed as questionable
RB  Darren Sproles   didn't practice all week because of concussion, questionable
WR  Vincent Jackson Has participated in only 2 plays all season, is a go for Sunday

My 11-5 last week brought my season record to 118-74. This ties me with ESPN's Ron Jaworski & Keyshawn Johnson & ahead of Adam Schefter, Mike Ditka, Merrill Hoge & Eric Allen.

I went against a strong trend this season, the Dolphins on the road. They play at the Jets Sunday & two of New York's three losses are at home. Miami is a staggering 5-1 on the road this season.

So is Bill Cowher going to return to coaching in 2011? If you listen to him lately, you might think so. "I'm open to listen to new opportunities. But not until the season is over, I love my job at CBS & I owe them a lot, so I'm staying put until then" Cowher said on Friday morning. Book it, he'll leave the New York studio & return to the sidelines in 2011.

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded to Auburn quarterback Cam Newton this evening. How many of you had him on your preseason Heisman watch list? Don't feel bad, not one single college football pundit, writer or broadcaster had a clue about Newton before the season began. The JUCO transfer came on so strong early this season, it just seems like he's been on everyone's radar all along. Not so, my personal Heisman watch list included Bama RB Mark Ingram, Boise State QB Kellen Moore, Stanford QB Andrew Luck, West Virginia RB Noel Devine & TCU QB Andy Dalton. Moore & Luck are two of the four finalists. I'm guessing if you combined the first place votes for Moore, Luck & LaMichael James & then doubled that number, it will still fall short of Newton's total.

As I was referring to my Heisman watch list from the August archives, I also noted my best preseason prognostication of this year. I had a category, "Long over due for a bowl win, this year they'll get it." I listed A&M, K-State, UTEP, San Diego State & Stanford. All 5 received bowl bids & all five are favored to win. WooHoo!

If you're having trouble finding just the right Christmas gift for that special football fan in your life, maybe I can help. I'll submit an extensive list of gifts in hopes of making your shopping experience a little easier. Look for it in the next few days.
